My last company was a local. DOT came and did a in house audit. Small company, 1 semi, a few trailers, dumps, mixers, etc. I was called into the office. I was the only one that DOT said my logs were fine. They wanted me to train the other drivers on keeping logs.

GREATTTTTTTT JOBBBBBBBBBB! That always makes someone feel good about them huh? Yeah they asked for some material I had on toll tickets and use it to this day. Like say you are going through Big oklahoma toll road. Well the receipts do not have the City & state you are @. So I made a book that has all the toll roads in the USA and put the nearest City & State next to the name of the toll road. This helps greatly when auditing drivers logs and not knowing where a toll road is at.
It made me feel good though DOT wants something I have made up and started. -
We have a lot in common then. I made up a lot of stuff too when it came to DOT. -
I'm glad you said something about toll tickets, it reminded me of a question I was going to ask: what is the deal with toll tickets? Do you have to keep them just like your logs or do like I do and throw them away as soon as you get them.lol!

Now on my last DOT audit with DOT (internal audit) they said why don't you "MAKE" the drivers turn in the toll tickets, well sir it would be an ongoing task to make sure they are turning them in. Payroll would not know they went through a toll and we would be spending all year dealing with this issue.
If you don't want paid for it, don't turn it in. Does DOT know you went through that toll anyhow? Yes most of the time, depends on the program they use.
What you must keep in mind is be driving (line 3) at the time the toll receipt reflects (using company you are working for time zone). Now what they do is a point to point. Meaning if you showed leaving Indy 2 hours prior to going through chicago, il toll they can tell the minimum hours it takes to get from that point to the toll. If you log 2 hours and the mininmum is 3, you will get written up for false log "speed limit".
DO NOT mark out the date or time of any receipt, this is a big red flag and will cause you to get into big trouble with DOT.
Did this answer your question & then some ?
HAVE A GREAT NIGHT . -
Don't bring your J down into the time either. Altering any document (Bill, toll, scale, accident etc) will tick DOT off quicker than anything. They stress highly to us (in office) to not reimburse drivers for this situation. -
Do I ever offer anything other than that? -
