I run a 5 foot antenna on top of the mirror and it sticks up just over the trailer a few inches (sitting still, and bends back in the wind a little while driving) and I haven't had any issues...except for the occasional tree branch here and there, but you can get that with any antenna size.

In Maryland I-895 tunnel DOT has ticketed trucks for antennas being over height 13'6".

I had two times that the DOT in NJ, MD, NY did a random check. They checked my radio equipment on a list and me amateur License i carry in my walet. In NJ they checked my radio equipment for violations of FCC part 95. I had a 4 watt Galaxy 929, Icom 7200 80 through 6 meter, 800 watt amp, and an Icom 2200 2 meter. I am an amateur radio operator. They questioned my equipment an antennas. My equipment was legal and so were my three antennas. BUT I had a radar detector that I forgot in the window and was ticketed. The ticket could have cost me a total of $1600.00, But. It was thrown out of court. The DOT officer was new and wrote up the ticket wrong. He used the wrong violation codes. Put the companies name on it without my name on it anywhere. He did not even put my CDL number on it anywhere. It did how ever cost me $300.00 for the attorney. Best $300 I ever spent.
