Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know anything about Alabama's weight laws? Do they permit overweight steel trucks? All I can find is their securement laws but nothing about weights and the permit office is closed.

I'm also a flatbedder and hate AK in Butler they are the worst. l Have only heard the horror stories of Middletown, hope I never have too,lol
Loaded many times at AK in Zanesville and Coshocton and don't mind either one!

Does your company require you to tarp all your loads? I have too, which I don't understand when 85% of the products are sitting outside in all weather anyways.

You can gross 80,000 unless you have over weight permits. You might consider getting a Rand McNally from one of the truck stops. It lists weights, low bridges, weigh stations, etc.,

Well that's actually my question. Kentucky will permit multiple coils up to 35miles at 120,000 on 6 axles or a single coil state wide, Indiana limits you to one unless your in the northern part around Gary on restricted routes. Ohio limits you to 3 coils also at 120k but I can't find anything about AL. I'm only asking because a company down there ordered 3 custom coil trailers and I got pics the other day from the dealer here trying to sell them. They copied the design of the one we have (mostly copied all the bad design parts) and I was curious if the state even allows coil permits or the guy is only hauling legal loads with it is why they built them like they did. The dealer is trying to find out how much weight the guy is hauling with them but I wanted to do my own research.

I've never been to Butler but I guess AK is working with PA to get them to loosen up their permit laws so I guess we'll see. I have zero issues at Middletown but it's like anywhere else, once you learn how the system works and which loading doors to avoid you can be in and out. Problem most guys run into is they try and load first thing in the morning when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. A lot of the doors are 24hr so why they wait until 7-8am to load is beyond me. Get loaded, then go to sleep. I load almost all mine at 2am and most the those times I'm one of the only trucks on the property. (which is impressive since the mill size is measured in square miles) Also they pay detention (assuming you can get it from your company). I don't like waiting either but I can sit for $50.00 per hr.:yes2557:

I have all conestogas so I tarp everything. :p Authough they make you tarp finished products for obvious reasons but the black iron coils they don't want salt on them. But in my experience the no tarp loads usually pay less.

If I were you I would call the Alabama over size permit office and speak with them directly.

I was going to but the were closed for the holidays. But if they're anything like Kentucky they won't have a clue. Kentucky didn't even know what they're law was and had to look it up, they when they issued my permits they were wrong. Gotta love government workers.:biggrin_25526:
