Did New York UNION snow crews sabotage clean-up?
'Don't worry if you miss a couple of streets,'" they said they were told. "'The city doesn't care about us, so don't worry about them.'"
Two other workers, assigned to clear secondary streets, say they were sent to their start points and told to wait for instructions which never came. "They told them, 'We'll get back to you,'" Halloran said. "Six or eight hours later they didn't."
Halloran said deliberate sabotage could help explain why the city was paralyzed for two days, when the previous big storm had been cleaned up in 24 hours.http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/2010123...uX2hlYWRsaW5lX2xpc3QEc2xrA2RpZG5ld3lvcmtzbg-- -
I wondered about that whole scene... there were heaps of unplowed streets in newspaper photos and on the air, with residents' cars buried under feet of snow. Of course, if you live with winter weather, you learn to stock up on necessities, the same way I stock my truck, but that situation was ridiculous.

I wonder what all those people did a 100 years ago when their were no snow plows on the streets of New York?
Why does every one whine over this crap? It takes time to properly clear snow off the roads.... And how many roads does NYC have? They should consider themselves lucky if it was cleared after 2 days instead of getting their panties all wadded up. -
no more unions working for cities and states. These guys have been working for years to leverage this group and get their people elected only to get the kickbacks in the form of outrageous pensions, healthcare packages that the citizens are forced to pay for and then mafia style tactics in sanitation workers. it happens all over the nation. Unions are run by lawyers...what do you expect? Do we really want to be the next france or greece?
-
...[T]he top salary of $66,672 is only the tip of the iceberg for active sanitation worker compensation because it excludes other things like overtime and extra pay for certain assignments. For example, one worker in 2009 had a salary of $55,639 but actually earned $79,937 for the year.
And they dont pay a dime for their health insurance our of their wages. Fire the lot of them.
-
Well thats what you get when your dealing with overpaid union workers, that know they can't get fired.
-
I would be willing to bet that 100 years ago New York wasnt NEARLY as populated as it is now and there werent nearly as many streets either...so it probably wasnt as big of an issue as it is now
-
Bloomberg had no problem removing salt from NYers food but couldn't find any for the streets!
-
Well I guess if there was a medical emergency , fire etc you would just make the best of it.
The best they could do back then was probably hunker down.
I would hope that the resources at the cities disposal would have been used with a concerted aggressive response.
In a situation such as these folks found themselves lives can be changed dramatically by someone with an agenda.
I know that I would lose sleep having this on my conscious.
