    Hey there!
I'm the abandoned :biggrin_1square11: wife to an inexperienced driver out on evo 1 with Roehl.

I've been reading some of the boards, but I can't get a clear picture of what is and isn't supposed to happen. Hubby tells me he's been sharing time with trainer, as in, driving through the night they will take turns because they have to use both of their hours to make the delivery deadline. I thought I read somewhere that trainers and trainees aren't supposed to drive as a "team." Does anyone have any insight or am I defining "team" wrong?

I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible so I can support us both with this new lifestyle so any information would be really appreciated.

Thats about right. Its like team driving as long as there comfortable sleeping while the other drives. It was like that with all my trainers. While one slept the other drove.

As far as the whole what is written and what really happens...well it's not like that in reality. As long as the trainer has faith in the trainee and they aren't breaking any "rules" then they will team drive.

Thanks for the quick replies! I just want to make sure he's safe out there and it sounds like what they are doing is part of the norm.

Trust me no trainer will put his life in jeopardy willingly. When I first started trainee's could not drive past midnight...so I would run till Midnight then my trainer would take over. That way I could get used to having a screwed up sleep cycle and sleeping in a moving truck. ( I can sleep anywhere so not a problem).

Same here, we would take turns as long as my trainer was comfortable with me behind the wheel (and judging by his snoring, he was!)

But the hard and fast rule he beat into my head was that no matter what, if I got tired, pull over!

I'm thinking your hubby been on the truck a day or 2 and the trainer is comfortable with his ability. The training is all about teaching him the job, and night driving and sometimes teaming is part of it. I'm sure all will be fine.

At Roehl for the first five days the trainer is not allowed to be in the sleeper while the student is driving. After that they are allowed to offset their ten hour breaks. Say a student starts at 6 am, he has to be done by 8 pm. The trainer can start his day at 10 am and go to midnight. So the truck can go legally 6 am to midnight. I doubt a trainer is running a full blown team operation, sleeping all the time while the student is driving. Maybe on one load that needed to be rescued or something.

I am a trainer at Roehl, I DO NOT team the truck with students. The trainer is supposed to be teaching the student, not just racking up miles to collect the money for. What does a student learn while I am in the bunk reading a book, sleeping or whatever... Yes we are able to offset out logbooks by upto four hours per day, but I know for sure that we have trainers that are Owner operators and lease operators that run like a team, and its all about the money, they could care less if you learn anything or not. I do not sleep behind students, and will not. It is not fair to them, and it is not what we are getting paid for.
