Cut salt and sugar from your diet as much as possible. Excess salt and sugar in your blood forces your body to retain water to dilute these substances, which, with the higher fluid volume in your bloodstream, raises your BP. The next statement won't seem to make sense, but trust me on this: drink lots of water. Just plain old clear, unflavored water. It will help flush your system. If you think about it, drink a glass of water. Even if you're not thirsty. If you allow yourself to get thirsty, you've waited too long to get a drink. Your pee should be no darker than lemon juice. If it is darker, you are dehydrated and need water.

    Good luck to you.

I've been on low dose BP for 20+ years also. I take my 5mg pill of Lisinipril first thing in the morning and I have never felt any side effects from it EVER!

Go see your physician and let him/her prescribe what the best hypertensive mediation is needed for you. Lisinipril is fine for some -- there are numerous medications for HTN (hypertension) out there. Since you say you have had one episode of an elevated B/P there are several other meds. that may be preferable -- get an MD to check you out.

+1 My blood pressure was creeping up the last few years, to much fast food and 4-5 pops a day. Went for a physical in August BP 154/98. Cut out all fast food and only one pop a day, by October BP down to 138/78 now 120/80 + or - 3 points consistantly.

Start reading lables you might be surprised how much salt is in almost everthing you eat.

    Good luck

You've gotten some really good advice here Rowdy. I can only echo what's been said, particularly about getting your BP under control before "hoping" to pass the physical at your prospective carrier. I've been on Lisinopril 20mg for going on 10 years now. It works for me but as has been said, only your physician can really prescribe properly for you.
While it's true that many drivers gain weight, at least initially, when starting out, I've had the opposite experience. I weighed in at 229 when I went to school. I'm 6'2" tall so that's not real bad but I've actually lost about 40lbs since May of last year when I started school.
I bought a Max Burton Stove to Go and use it for soups, stews, steaming veggies, etc. It, I believe, has been the single most helpful tool in losing the weight and keeping it off.
I check my BP regularly and see my doctor at least twice a year.
Do not, under any circumstances or for any reason, neglect this important issue. Hypertension can be dangerous to major organs but, in the vast majority of cases, can be controlled easily.
Take care of yourself and best of luck! Oldnew...:biggrin_25514:

okay, one word of caution on Injun's advice. There are levels of dehydration, if your urine is dark, yes you are dehydrated, but at that point, your past dehydated and should have been upping your fluid intake an hr earlier. Once your urine is that color, the amount of water you will need to drink to bring it back to an acceptable level will make you have to pee more frequently.

As for the OP, I've been on lisinopiril since Nov., my BP has always been on the low side of normal, only recently did it start to raise, my last time at the Dr. before starting it, was 130/80. I check mine at home daily (with a electronic unit and with a regular BP cuff and stethoscope, I used to be an EMT). I take the lisinopiril at night, the few side effects I find with it, about 12 hrs after taking it, I'm a little drowsy but it wears off. Also, I notice a slight dry cough in the morning, also if I try and do strenuous activity without eating in the AM (only since taking this stuff), I get nauseated, but my wife found a side effect she (and I) likes :yes2557:, morning sex :biggrin_25522: tends to last longer :yes2557:.

Went to the doc and he checked me out. Looked back a few years to when I was 6'3" & 220 w/ BP 125/75 on his chart. Now I'm 6'3" & 235. He said he'll put me on a low dose of Lisinopril for now but wants me to lose 15 lbs. He thinks he can take me off it if I'll get my weight back down a little. Will taking the med cause a problem at company physical? Assuming that BP is below the 140/90 red-flag at that time. I've been eating right and walking 3 miles every day for the past week. Already feel a change starting to take place! Thanks to everyone for taking time to respond to me!
