I have the basic $90 Tom Tom model and it works fine for me. I do mostly local driving.
Like others have said though, make sure you don't let it take the place of your maps because a gps can get you in a jam just as quick as it can help you.

That driver, is probably some of the best advice a relatively new driver such as yourself could give an even newer driver.KUDOS for such a thought provoking reply that actually has substance and logic.
I run a gps, mainly for the speedometer and distance, that is for an automobile. It has come in handy often enough but i still rely heavily upon my well worn atlas(plus a magnifying glass as i am rapidly approaching 50!) and the actual directions from the consignee.
I'd rather use my cellphone as opposed to the gps but the newer and younger drivers are extremely technology prone.
That is for another topic though-

I hear it all the time, but the GPS is a tool. If you tell it how you want to go, it is the best tool EVER.

I think the 465T Nuvi unit is some what like my 755T, and it is more suited for cars then it would be for a truck driver?? I have used my 755T for 5 years now, it has been a very good unit, but again more suited for cars.

EDIT - I might be worng and the 465T could be the Truck Unit that Garmin came out with too.

It sounds like a pretty good unit.

I had the Rand McNally 500 and sold it when I got out of trucking. I liked it for the fact it never let me down finding a business, but it routed me with strange directions sometimes.

I use the Garmin 465T. It is made specifically for trucks. I have not been taken under any bridges lower then 13 6. Ive not been lost yet.

Tomtom sucks IMO ... crappy wires and connectors, and just a standard GPS, not geared for commercial trucks.

Sensor in the cord, if it goes bad (replaced 2) - pricey to replace with original equipment - bad battery life.

Constant bugging for the fastest route, 99% of the time not viable for trucks.

Too slow to calculate route, frequent software crashes, off mark road maps.

30 - 40 % address errors, no general options for interstate or national network routes.

Calculates the entire route - then asks "use carpool lanes?" or "use toll roads" - then proceeds to take several minutes to recalculate - but no general setting - or one I could find that worked.

Frequent lost satellite connections, and difficulty finding connections again.

Will never buy that brand again.
