Ok, here it goes. I'm looking for a truck to run the flatbed, for now. I've been in t600 and it's so not me, small, tight, cramped, ugh-period. t2000 and its counterpart pete are bulky feeling and looking. Volvo is great, but, engine is hard to reach and parts are hard to reach just like t2000 and its brother pete. #86, however, is so darn homey feeling, big, comfy, "cute" - lol, the WHOLE engine is visible upon opening the hood. So, anyone had any experience with 386 and can give me advice as far as weight, good and bad on the truck. I'll be hauling flatbed, for now, and will be looking for 2007 and pre 2007 with may be a cat engine and a 13spd tranny is a min. 18 is great.

    Advice please. Thank you.

A 386 is a good truck. The last carrier I was at had about 10 of 'em with C13's... pretty trouble free trucks.

I'm not sure any 370-series cab is bigger than the KW W-series but either one suits me just fine.

it is the same pete from the firewall back like the 379/389/ etc. good pete truck, weight is inline with other pete's, 17k dry weight, loaded up, gear and stuff, around 19k with driver, but with headache rack/chains etc, you're lookin at close to 20k or so. nothing really bad about the truck itself, I would definitely look for a pre 07 (2006/07 model) with a c15 cat, just my personal preference I would not own a 2008 or newer truck with all the dpf crap. buy now that year model cat has had all the warranty campaigns and such done and the bugs worked out. I would get the eng serial # as well as truck vin # and have the warranty report pulled on them, from cat and pete if your not buying from a pete dealer, before I signed anything, just to make sure all is well and no re-occuring issues that may be bigger issues down the road. just my .02 as a former peterbilt technican and longtime diesel mechanic. good luck.

I ran into a driver in SLC a few weeks ago with a 386. He hated it - but it may have bee his particular configuration (company truck). Darn thing had ONE 100 gallon fuel tank.

386 is a separate cab and sleeper, like the 379/388/389 and is the same exact truck as those except for the axle placement and hood layout. the 387/t2000 are a totally different truck from the normal lines, they have an integrated cab/sleeper, they have a much more complex wiring than any other truck on the road, and the 387 especially, but im sure the t2 has some of the same issues. alot of electrical, and controller issues with these trucks. me personally I would go for the 386, over the 387/t2000 any day of the week. just my .02

if you find gears on here, he has a 387 he got used from a fleet. He has had a few electrical issues, but nothing major, as far as the truck itself, most of my experience is with the 387's, its a good truck, but once they get some miles on them, moisture and corrosion does funny things to the electrical systems and components on the 387's. just giving you my exp and opinions, you should be able to find some guys like gears on here to give you more guidance, but ultimately you have to take what you have been given and make the choice yourself. good luck to you.
