    Hi,
Anybody out there willing to give a newbie Truck driver in Canada a overview of the Canadian drivers hours law. What I can do and what I can`t do. And how does it differ from USA law?
    Any help would be great
    Thanks,

Canadian rules are SIMILAR however NOT the same, I haven't crossed the border in almost a year (I run the corridor)so I'll let an American friend mention rules there.

    Canada

13 hours to drive - Max
14 hour day - Max (can be 16 hrs with 2 hrs Off Duty)
to do your driving in, pre trip, fueling, loading, unloading and other daily routines associated with on duty status

    10 hours off duty

You can take up to two hours off duty during your day to count towards your 10 (1/2 hour minimum breaks),
example - 1/2 hr breakfast 1/2 hr lunch 1 hr dinner

(the total of 2 hours off duty does not count towards your 14)

    8 hrs sleeper berth + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1 = 10

If you take more than 2 hours off during the day lets say you show 5 hours off, IT DOESN"T MATTER, the extra 3 hours count towards your 14 hour day.

sound confusing? it is, until you get used to them, I believe I am logging properly, as I haven't been called into the office since the new HOS came into effect in January

You must have a 24 hour period off duty within the previous 14 days. This 24 hour period can be a combination of lines 1 & 2 and split between 2 days is fine. It does not have to be done in one day.

Canada requires the previous 14 days worth of logs.

There is an attatchment that goes over the basic changes in a nut shell. I believe Cybergal gave you the attatchment to the detailed regulations.

The attatchment will discuss the difference between US & Cananda.
I stress to stay under the US regulations and understand you only need to worry about this

Pre-trip: Make sure it is done in writting & you show time on line 4
24 hours off in the previous 14 days
    Odometer readings: Read article
The personal use is only while in Canada.
The odometer reading needs to be on all previous 14 log sheets (therefore best to just write them on the logs every day regardless).
Make sure you print your name on the log somewhere.
Take 36 hour restarts instead of 34. Canada requires a 36 hr restart.

I am sure i have left something out, but the attatchment should cover anything else. I am no pro at the rules, but I do know them a little.

I hauled my share of Labatts out of Waterloo and London, ON, before 9/11. We had to enter the tractor and trailer license plate numbers on our logs along with the equipment numbers. We entered the location where fuel was purchased and the number of gallons. This included U.S. fuel stops.
