E davies, Hopefully the electronic log system will allow you to have a little wiggle room with your logs. Such as waiting on load with your 14 hr rule not running. It makes a big difference what line you put things on in order to maximize your week. The little things help you get the job done but not really cheating. The company I run for now still uses loose leaf logs we log as it happens. Every ones in while we run up close to hours usually 14 hr rule and sometimes 11hr rule having that wiggle room is the difference inbetween making it happen or not. Hopefully it wont cost you money.

I went throgh the same roads in Nebraska, what a MESS!! Sunday I came US 183, and got on I 80 there, everything was fine until Lexington, I must have been through there after you, because there was a 20 vehicle accident on the East bound side, and a lot more on down the road in the ditch. I delivered to the Wal Mart in North Platte, and then headed back east on I 80, they got all the trucks out of the road, but still left about 10 trucks still in the ditch.
Nebraska has to be the worst state on how they take care of the roads. Especially the US highways.
I am sitting here in Dallas now, they got hit here also!

To canuck-i think heyl is only looking for drivers near the lancaster, harrisburg area. I work for heyl and talk to the recruiters from time to time. Im always looking to refer a driver cause I get a bonus if they get hired. As for being close to toronto, you would have to live in canada for that to happen.

Barracuda, I see that you are coming up this way (portland,or). Hopefully you ran in front of the ice storm we had up the gorge on I84 yesterday and were able to make it to your appt on time. Had a buddy who got caught in it said the road was an ice rink real nightmare. Temps are suppose to be much warmer through the weekend so you should have no problem getting out of the NW. Just curious did they resolve your speedometer issue?

if you know someone in toronto you could use there address. I know that heyl has a few drivers out of toronto and peterbourough. Im not sure where they park their trucks though. You would just have to call one of the recruiters and talk to them. I know they would tell you no right away if you said you were from erie.

I ran as hard as I could legally and barely made it ahead of the storm. I pulled into Troutdale yesterday at 1600 local. The TA there has a great restaurant but the parking is horrible. The wind was really shaking the truck last night. When I woke up this morning the windshield was completely covered with a thick layer of ice.

I made my delivery this morning in Woodburn with no real problems. They rejected one case of OJ because it was 1 carton short. I was told to dispose of the rest of it. Thank goodness I have an electric cooler onboard. I'll ensure it gets disposed of. :biggrin_25519:

Right now I am waiting for my trailer to be repaired at the Utility dealer in Clackamas. The ABS light was on the entire trip up here. There was a sensor on the trailer that had failed so it needs to be replaced. After that it will be back to the TA in Troutdale. More than likely I will take a 34 hour reset there before heading to Washington for a load of potatoes. I have to take the reset because I only have 13 hours left on my 70 (including today) to last me the next three days. Yesterday was my shortest day since leaving the yard and that was still 10.5 hours. The rest of the days were all 11 plus hours and 650 plus miles to make my delivery on time.

    Hello Baracuda,

Great posts. Enjoy reading them. I have a couple of questions if you do not mind. How much Southeast and East coast does Heyl do. I do not mind every now and then, just not a steady diet, which I am doing now and have been for the last 2 years. I have pretty much forgotten what west of IN and IL looks like. I know realy good MN to the SE and OH to the SE looks like, also alot of bama and GA.

Do any of their trucks have double bunks and what kinda Volvo's are they. Volvo is my preference. Also, where would Orientation be for someone from Ohio and do you think that it would be a problem for me getting home just east of Columbus.

Thanks and be safe out there.

The company does run to the east coast. As far as NYC goes it is rare. Mainly, loads in the east are to places like Pottsville, PA, Keasbey, NJ, Salem, NJ, and Laurel, MD. Keasbey is about to NYC as you can get. I have there and it was easy access from the turnpike to the warehouse. Mostly the company runs the midwestern states along with Texas and the northwest.

Some of the trucks do have double bunks. The freightshaker I had was a condo with double bunks. The volvo I now have (I believe this is a model 780) is a double bunk model. I use the upper bunk for sleep and leave the table in the upright position. This the best truck I have had as far as onboard comfort and living conditions. The cummins engine certainly does have the torque, however, I find that the fuel economy on this engine is more sensitive to the environment (hills, wind, etc.) than the cat or the detroit.

I can't say about home time where you live. Contact a recruiter and see if you are in the hiring area. I do know that when you are on home time they like their trucks and trailers on the yard.

I am still here in Troutdale taking a 34 hour reset. When I can roll it will be just like the last time I was here which was head over to Kennewick, WA for a load of frozen potatoes heading to San Antonio, TX. This load will be 2100 plus miles. I don't mind going to San Antonio. The guy who runs the bar-b-q truck in the parking lot of the flying j has some of the best ribs anywhere.

I just spent the longest time at a shipper I've ever spent in my 7 years of driving. 21 HOURS!! I Live 2 hours south of Ft.Worth, so when I come off my home time I usually pick up in either Waco or Ft. Worth. Heyl has at least 4 loads a day that come out of the Versacold Cold Storage in Ft. Worth, where we always pick up Dannon Yogurt, either going up the midwest or Florida. That is a very good place, I am usually out of there in an hour past my appointment time. BUT, occasionally we pick up out of the Dannon plant in Downtown Ft. Worth, I have been there 12 hours before, and heard of other stories like that. Last 2 times I was there, I was there only 2 hours. This time, someone messed up somewhere. I got there at 5pm for my 6pm appt. Sat there waited, went to bed, next thing I know it is 6 in the morning and still nothing. I go back into the shipping office, and they tell me they are waiting on 2 pallets that are coming from Versacold, the place where I usually go to pick up the load. I wasn't to upset, I did get paid all night to sleep! That was one of the reasons I decided to go with Heyl was for their detention pay, which is something like $8/hour after 4 hours, but it is better than nothing. I talked to the shipper again at 10, they said still waiting on 2 pallets that a local driver is bringing it over, shipper said they would normally cut the missing product, but the reciever said they wanted all of it. I was headed to Mt Sterling, Il by 9am the next day, 800 miles, and now the load will be late. But at least the reciever said they will take it when I get there. Hopefully all that missed time wont make me miss a reload somewhere on friday. That is one thing I will never understand, why things are the way they are in the supply chain.

Barracuda, I love the run down US 6, then 491 through Moab, and into New Mexico. That is some of the most beautiful parts of the couunrty. Everytime I go through there I am in awe of the beauty, and how the earth is formed. But be safe running through the snow that you will probably be hitting again.

Blsqueak, just like what Barauda said, NJ is far northeast as we normally go. In my 4 years here, never been to NYC. As far as the southeast, you WILL get a stady diet there!!! I know that when I am playing in the snow up north, that there is alway a good chance to get a load going back to Florida to warm up for a while. But as far as even getting hired out of Ohio is not likely, but always a chance.
