I am about to have my first baby (a baby girl) and I'm thinking about going after a trucking carrier. Can anyone recommend a good CDL school in the Miami Florida area. Is it possible to make 50k or more a year driving in state or just in the city or do I have to get cross country jobs to make the good money. I would really appreciate any info on the trucking industry. Thanks in advance for all the info.

If I was about to have a baby, or my wife was LOL, I'd have to be able to be home all the time...You can't get back those years or missed memories and a mom needs her hubby there during those early years...But that's me...

Well, it's not easy to get local, or to make $50k a year right of the start. You are in a tough part of Florida too. Not a lot hiring out of that part of Florida.

Why on earth would you want to invest your own money into a school for truck driving. I am sure there are other schools that you could attend that you could make a decent living at and still be home at night with your family.

Try to have twins if possible..............
there is a 14 on 7 off, or 14 off and 7 on...........
perfect fit for you !!!!!! -
Take the advice of Wicked Wizard, go to school to do something than driving a truck. The times that you miss with your child cannot be replaced. You are needed at home to help raise your child, especially a new born. Your wife will need you at home to give her a break.

Trucking is not for you! At least until your baby is older. You are going to be gone from home for a minimum of 4-6 weeks at a time with two days off when you do come home. Actually you live in Fl so you most likely be kept out longer than that. Don't waste your money in going to trucking school. This is the number one reason for new drivers quitting.

I started school today, and one of the other students in the class is a young guy, not very sure of himself as it is, and he has one toddler, and a baby on the way. He was talking to me about going OTR solo, or teaming with someone he knows who lives on the other side of the country. He already washed out once when he was a bit younger, got sent home from a mega-carrier, and for some reason decided to try again, this time getting his license at community college.
I told him he should expect to be out 4-6 weeks to start, and after that, home time would depend on load demand and freight lanes, and that having a team driver who lives a few days drive away might be another small problem. I'm not sure if he's really got a feel for what it'd mean; too bad, as it'll be tough on him if he washes out again.
