Last week i was driving on the motorway, where a truck was tailgating me at 100km/h. I slowed down in hope that he would put some distance between my vehicle and his truck. He didn't. Instead he hit my car.I managed to get his plate number of the front of his truck. He then changed lanes. I was in shock as i have a small Ford Fiesta. I wasn't able to get the plate number off the trailer he was carrying.
I reported the accident to the Police only to find out that the number plate on the truck was registered to a green Ford Falcon who's rego expired a few years ago.
The Police said there is nothing they can do.
Please help any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't see why i should be out of pocket for the irresponsible behaviour of another. Nor should people like this be able to continue driving on our roads.
False plates

You were able to get a plate number from the front of the truck while it was behind you, but couldn't get a trailer plate number when it passed you? Very peculiar..

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. Next time identify the truck by the truck # on the side of the hood, the company name on the door and/or the MC# on the side.
If he's running on illegal tags, he'll get caught before too long. Trucks are subject to random inspections which most of us get 1-2 times a year.
Ford Fiesta? That must be the last one on the road.

My advice? Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance coverage. File a claim if you have it. Learn a hard lesson if you don't. The fee for this coverage is very minimal considering how uninsured drivers are out there. You'd be surprised how many drivers don't have insurance. Or valid drivers licenses, for that matter. Of course, the rest of us end up paying for their irresponsibility.
You do have insurance, right? -
Yeah, truck ID can be a problem. Sometimes in my 4 wheeler, I come along side a nice looking truck or a POS and I'm looking for the name on the side and can't easily find ID numbers. Some are on the fuel tank, or the rear deflectors, or the drivers door or who knows where. Some fancy handwriting is hard to decipher also. Some front license plates are hanging low and are bent under the bumper. Trying to read this and keep your vehicle on the road can be a PITA. Then of course, do you have a pen and paper handy ?

actually i think a mini cassette tape recorder is better. i use one when i cross state lines and have to take the mileage. its difficult to write when you are driving, as you need to focus on the rad...but by talking into a mini recorder you have the ability to watch the road and give a much better description..an even BETTER thing to have would be a dash cam.......for the price of a cell phone and memory card, now just show the video to the cops...
just a thought or two..... -
If a truck that outweighs you buy at least ten, comes up behind you, he could be distracted, having a bad day or even a medical condition. Or he could be a thief and not know how to drive. Personally I get out of peoples way, there was a thread about being a beer can, you should find and read it.
You slowing down, being ignorant and him hitting you, being ignorant. You loose.grimesjm1 Thanks this. -
They make them again for 2010+. Go FORD!!

I just saw that today on the MSN website for one of the top ten mpg non hybrid vehicles. I like Ford too.
