There allot of things that you have to consider before you go it alone. the very first is the freight you are going to haul. here are some of the questions you need to answer before you even start.
1. Do you have contracts or are you going to be hauling brokered frieght.
2. What area you going to run.
3. What type of freight.
4. How much insurance do you need
5. How much capitol do you have. (remember some places don't pay for 60 days.)
6. How many trucks are you going to have.

These are just the first steps to figureing it out. It gets real complicated real fast when you go independent. My advise is to buy a truck and go with some one like landstar who is as close to beeing independent as you can get with out your own authority. Try it for a while 1 or 2 years see how it works for you before you make the jump to indepedent. Its tuff and getting tuffer from what i read in the buisness journals.
