What you will do at your school to get your permit will depend on the school.

The school I'm attending does not do videos or practice tests. Everyone in the class was advised well ahead of the first day to get the state manual and study it. There are short quizzes throughout the book which we're expected to do on our own. In class, our instructor goes over each section of the manual, with an emphasis on key points. He then verbally quizzes us, over and over.

We will finish our fourth day of this tomorrow, and then everyone will test for permits, including all of the endorsements that each of us wants to get.

This school does not check MVRs, nor do they do drug testing; it's up to you to know whether you have issues that will cause you problems with employers.

They made arrangements for our DOT physicals, and the cost was included in our tuition. If you plan to test for your permit on your own, make sure you get your DOT physical ahead of time, and bring your card with you, as you'll need it to get the permit when you pass your tests.

The approach at this place, which I like, is that we only have to pass the permit test one time, and then we can move on to the important preparations for skills tests. Our instructor doesn't teach more than is required to get your license, as his view is that you'll be trained on the job by whoever hires you, to do what they need to have done, in the way they want it done. Whatever is required will be thoroughly hammered into our heads.

So far, I'm happy with it. No hand holding at this place; if you want it, you're going to have to work at it.

I live in Illinois......got my permit 2 weeks ago.

Process: I just walked into the DMV(make sure the one you go to handles CDL requirements, I went to West Chicago) they check your drivers license, and as long as it's valid they'll assign you to a computer to take the "General Knowledge, & Combination" test, so you want to study those sections in the handbook. ****The "Airbrake" test is optional in Illinois, so you don't have to take that test, but I would recommend you do because you'll have to take it eventually to get yr actual CDL.

-Cost is $50.
-You can take each test 3 times, in which if you still don't pass you'll have to wait 30 days and pay $50 again.
- They don't take VISA cards, so either have cash, check or a non Visa card.
- They require a DOT card (eventhough they didn't check mine). I went to an urgent care facility the day before and got one done for $58 bucks, and I have no insurance.

***Make sure ur license is clear. I've never gotten a speeding ticket or been in an accident, but when I went to the DMV and gave the clerk my license the first thing he asked was "do you have any tickets on your record?". Apparently I had a window tinting ticket on mine from 2008 that was unpaid, and it was preventing me from getting the permit. I had to rush to the county court and have it taken off. (Shouldve been a warning since I have WI plates, but the cop messed up and issued it as a ticket.) Once that was cleared up I went in and it was a very quick process for the permit. The CDL manuals are free as well.

 

Also as many others have stated, most schools will take you through the permit process. I was originally going to attend company paid training through Swift, and they (like the majority of company sponsered training schools) require IL residents to have their Class A permit beforehand. I eventually decided to go with Prime (which for some reason is the only one I found that doesn't require it) but they said it still helps to have it beforehand.

 

The cdl book has every location where to take the test. One place I know is in Morris, Il You can test from 8-5 Tues -Sat. Closed Sun and Monday. The test is all touch screen.

ah geez...i didn't catch the "leaner's" either........in that case, at my age, i don't need any permit to lean.....it comes naturally....!!!
