I would say so, because there is no rule that says you must sleep when off duty. You only need to be off duty.

It may fly for a school bus.

A CDL driver operating a CMV is supposed to log "non-motor carrier compensated hours" and the explanation was anything a commercial driver did outside trucking was supposed to be 'on duty - not driving' such as a part time job and even mowing the next door neighbor's lawn, if you got paid for it!

You may volunteer for all of your of duty hours and it does not count towards the HOS so you could drive the Sunday school bus or any other uncompensated time but if granny next door pays you $5.00 to cut her lawn on Saturday morning it is supposed to be on your log!

In over twenty years of looking at logs, I've never seen any CMV driver log such time but the FMCSA wants you to do so!

School bus driver's don't need a log or record their on duty status. They can moonlight all they want until you #### up & kill someone's kid.
