I've always thought those school bus drivers should undergo more rigorous training... over the years, I've seen some of them do some highly dangerous things, like swinging a busload of kids into the path of an oncoming big truck. One would think, in light of the young passengers aboard, that the training and qualification process for becoming a school bus driver would be most rigorous of all, even more so than the qualification process for those who routinely haul Hazardous clear across the United States. Those school bus drivers who are conscientious and safety-minded, disregard this post. :biggrin_2554:

Very true I feel. It seems many of the school bus drivers and even the coach drivers are constantly doing things I feel they shouldn't. I've been cut off numerous times by the busses for my local high school. it almost seems like they are thinking ok this guy sees me and knows I have kids on board he'll stop. And this has also happend on snowy days. unfortunate it happen and hope they are all ok.

One of my instructors is the Director of Transportation for a local school system. He told me that their drivers go through a 12 hour class to learn to deal with children while driving. Another 4 hours riding with a driver just observing. Another 3 hour class session, and finally a 2 hour on-road test with real students. One mistake, and you are disqualified.

I would hope all schools do something like this before allowing a person to drive our children around.

That's still not enough, but it's better than nothing. The freight these buses haul around is worth alot more than any of us pull.

I'll never understand why their training is not as thorough as that of a pilot or why they think it's okay for kids to not wear a seatbelt.

The seatbelt thing is because of this: in an emergency, the driver possible unbuckle everybody in a timely manner. Think along the lines of fire...or stuck on train tracks...etc
