Non union driver here, and yes my company pays us drivers for shutting down due to weather conditions.Roads do not need to be closed, entirely up to the driver and no there is no limit to how long you are down, 1hour to 1 week.

And those union drivers who walked the picket lines probably is the very reason you have what you have today.

most companies won't even pay for the work you do. you think they're going to pay you for NOT working? is it legal? seriously? layover pay is just another trick (lie) companies use to get people to go to work for them. if they really wanted to, they could pay you a penny a week and there's not a darn thing you could do about it (other than quit.)

What would the company think if since you are under a load, you are marooned. You leave the truck and go to the motel a few blocks away for 35 straight hours and do not check on the truck.

After all, you are not being paid to check on it or anything.

Since they do not have to pay you to not work, you do not have to do anything.

We might pay dues but we make up for it by earning 20%- ??% more then most (notice I said most) nonunion drivers. Plus insurance is paid for so add.. what $100 a week for a family? I don't know if I would say we lose money on dues.

Hey if your happy with what you have then good for you. I'm not trying to start a Union vs nonunion war. (I know Rick loves to talk anti-union) :biggrin_2551:

I also pull a cryo tanker...mainly argon, we are paid hourly for any traffic delays wheather it is accidents or road closures...we are paid as soon as the wheels stop..also paid for slow mph averages due to dangerous road conditions( we are paid mileage but if our mileage pay drops below our hourly rate we are paid hourly while driving) that is pretty standard around here anyway I think all of our competitors pay this way also..

I pay union dues but Im not paying $300+ a month for insurance ,make a good living wage and get paid for all time spent working( no giving 2 hours then making $10.00 an hour..)...If not for the union drivers the companies would not be paying the non union drivers anymore than min wage.....

And your basis for this eronious statement is what?

When I sat in Pendleton,Indiana Wednesday am all the paid by the mile drivers (Crete, Premier, Swift etc) were bemoaning the fact that they were making ZERO! I'll bet the YRC del/pu driver who was napping didn't give a rat's rectum because he was on the clock.

    Again, who was losing money?
