It's going really good.
There are only two in our class, so we get plenty of practice. We've been practicing real driving scenerios, through town and up and down hills on I5 here in Oregon. We've also been practicing our straight, 45 and 90 degree backing, starting to get the hang of it. We've learned to slide the tandems and fifth wheel, coupling and uncoupling.
I'm really glad I picked this school, the instructors are very professional veteran drivers and know how to teach.
Until next time
Be blessed and have a great day!![]()

Hey Y2K thanks for the encouragement. I figured it would be somewhat different when I actually start driving. I find it easier not to use the clutch, but the instructors say we have to double clutch for the DMV test. We are learning on a ten speed tranny, from what I've read May use 13?
The school I'm attending is: Umpqua Community College in Roseburg,OR
Well Y2K you have a blessed day
Bluedew Thanks this. -
Okay,
I am in my 2nd week of range training here at my school. Don't have much time left to make up my mind. (6 weeks)
I listened to all the recruiters and have done so much research I think I just might write a book!
May has not been to my school but they are one of the companies that my school works with.
Two weeks ago I thought I had my choice down but I have been digging a little bit deeper.
The FMCSA website has been very helpful with the statistics and this forum has been invaluable to me.
May has fallen through the cracks and was not on my radar until tonight.
I did not realize that May has a reefer division and I happened to check out the website.
So here I go again..........
I would like to hear from current drivers who can give me non-bias candid feedback about May.
Safety and professionalism is paramount to me.
I know there is no perfect company but I have been wracking my brain hoping to find something close to my philosophy.
I'll be calling May in the AM.
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

May might be a good fit, they do it by the book legal and do stress safety.Desert Dog Thanks this.

Yes May trucks are 13 speeds and you will find shifting by "floating" the gears easier but you'll need to double clutch on your road tests for the state and probably company tests.

I filled out an online application for May last weekend, I hadn't heard anything, so I gave Opal a call Friday, apparently she had called and left a message on my cell, I must have deleted it by accident

She said there are no trainers yet, to give her a call in two weeks, which will be the day I am finished with school, so hopefully one of you trainers will be available
I'm ready to go to work

Best of luck man,it shouldn't take too long,I had a trainer 3 days after orientation but like you it took a few weeks to get called in for orientation so hang in there.

They will take you out for a buffet lunch every day during orientation and if you live far enough away they'll put you up in a motel with a shuttle to the terminal and it's a real nice motel with a great free breakfast buffet.CAM Thanks this. -
Thanks Y2K, I told my wife this weekend, "This thing is really happening!" It's like I was so busy in school I didn't have time to think about it, LOL.
It won't be long now.
As far as the buffet lunch goes, I sure don't need that, but I doubt I'll turn it down
How long is orientation? not that it matters, just curious.
Be blessed you all, stay safe out there. -
If I remember right it was 3 days for orientation.
I hear ya on the buffet,It sure was good though lol.
I've lost 30 lbs since last June, been careful what I eat and get out and hike around a lot plus ride my bike when I'm home.
I don't want to be a 300lb trucker and I was well on my way at 275 when I decided I had to change some things in life,at 54 years old it was hard but I'm doing really well at it. -
Three days, that is shorter than I thought it would be.
Good for you on losing the weight, I know it's difficult I lost 40 pounds before the holidays, then gained 15 back. I'm really have to be careful
don't want to go back there again
Y2K, looking forward to meeting you, really hoping to getting hired on by May.
Are you running 48 or western 11? I plan on running 48, I've seen too much of I-5 already lol
