Oil patch trucking or what we call 'infield' work - is financially rewarding. BUT - you require H2S ticket, Confined Space ticket, TDG, WHIMIS, St.Johns Ambulance (Level 1), and many companies will require GODI or equiv.
Oil patch trucking is 50% backroads, and 50% up to your axles. During 'Spring break up' which is usually between april - may, depending on how long it takes the ground to harden, companies slow right down, or end up laying off for that period of time.
This is just the basics - hope it helps.

Oh - Sorry - I forgot to answer your question about what companies. A good company is Sanjel to start with. They will lay it on pretty thick about the pay you will receive. BUT, they are really a good company to learn on. If you want other companies - theres Tri-can, Gibson Energy, ... I could go on...

there are alot of different jobs within the oil patch.
there is rig moving, oil hauling, fracing, mud and pipe hauling etc.. depending what you want to do.
i operate a semi vac truck in the lloydminster area and i do very little driving compared to the highway side of trucking. average 200 km in a 14 hr day. i can see it starting to slow down already this year,
so my advice is surf the web and find out what kind of patch work you want to do then contact the companies in late spring to see if they are hiring.chauhanprv Thanks this. -
I have been driving 18 wheeler from past few years and have clean record. I'm looking for driving job in oil patch but don't know which companies to apply at. And as per SARA do need to get some of the special required tickets to work there. Any help is appreciated.

Most of the companies will put you through the training for the required tickets. If you quit within 3 months, you're on the hook for the training. If not, the company absorbs the cost. All the training is for most of those things, is reading a book, doing a multiple choice test, and the company signs off that you have it done. Only H2S and first aid, if I remember right, will require you to go through some classes.

I have done first aid course twice already and don't know if the new company will accept that certificate which is still valid till 2012. Rest I have done WHIMIS and matter of fact I use to train people on WHIMIS. Rset of the tickets I will have to do.

Also, you should consider getting PST/CSTS and OSSA. These are required for most work in the Ft Mcmurray area. The PST/CSTS is about $100+- and includes WHMIS and OSSA is $60-$80 and both tickets are good for life, no renewal required. While some companies will pay for your tickets we often require a driver right away and don't have time to put a driver through the courses so we look for drivers that already have them so, if you are serious, I would recommend you take the initiative and get them.chauhanprv Thanks this.
