When I was driving, I never had a DOT officer tell me the BOL# had to be anywhere on the logs. I would think the trip number is ok since it is how a company tracks shipments' movement. Also, the driver has the BOL in his/her posession, so they can look at that directly if necessary. YMMV of course

when i went to driving school at w/s, this was part of the curriculum, and this is why w/s requires its drivers to have the trip number on their logs.

the intent is to give DOT some way of synchronizing a drivers logs with what the driver has been doing. if the log states the driver went from shipper to consignee in 300 miles and the driver picked up in los angeles and delivered in chicago, perhaps the driver's log is not accurate...

and for those of you who are "raising the BS flag": walstib has quoted the relevant portion of 395.8 which is the regulation that requires what must be on the driver's logbook. the full text of 395.8 is here.

as 123456, if you guys would read that little green book, you might know what you are supposed to be doing...

    123456 Thanks this.

I have been leaving the spaces blank. I haul my company's own products and have never been questioned about this practice. In light of this thread I started today by writing "various" for BoL numbers and the name of my company as shipper. I'll be sticking to this formula, and thanking the forum for reminding me of what I should have been doing all along.

Yep, I been using shipper and commodity for years. Never had a problem.

In fact my log book says shipper/commodity right beside that box.
