Someone had a comment on making weight.
I do not know how you would "make weight" but I can explain how to set tandoms and your 5th wheel fairly easy.
When you get a weight slip from the cat scale or other public scale it will have 4 weights on it.
The first is your Steer axle weight.
Second is the Drive axle weight.
Third is the Tandom axle weight.
Fourth is the total gross weight.
When sliding the tandoms you always want to slide them toward the weight.
So if you are heavy on the drives you will have to slide the tandoms forward.
If you are heavy on the tandoms, you will need to slide them back.
The 5th wheel is backwards.
If you are heavy on the steers you will need to slide the 5th wheel back.
And if you are trying to move weight off the drives to the steers you will have to slide forward.
I will use an actual weight ticket for an example.
I had a load that I scaled that the weights were this.
Steer axle 11440
Drive axle 34060
Trailer axle 32260
Gross weight 77760
To fix the weight on this load and just make it legal, all you have to do is slide the tandoms on the trailer forward 1 hole. Or you can slide your 5th wheel forward 1 notch.
Moving the tandoms will adjust about 250 lbs per hole.
Moving the 5th wheel will move about 350 lbs per notch.
I only had about a quarter of a tank of fuel in the truck when I scaled the load though.
So I wanted the drives lighter so that I could take on at least a half a tank of fuel. Or at least 100 gal. Since the fuel weighs 7.3 lbs per gal, that means that I need to have room for an extra 100 gal on the drives.
Thus using the 250 lbs per hole math on the tandoms, it means that I need to slide them forward 4 holes.
Remember, the 250 is a guess.
At times this will be accurate, and at times depending on the load it will not. You are basically looking for the pivot point of the weight on the load. So that you can get a little extra weight on the trailer end. So always reweigh if you are adjusting out more than 500 lbs.
And always get an extra hole if possible.
Not all scales are created equal. No two scales will give exactly the same weight. Unless they were both certified that day.
For added info,
My 5th wheel really is 1 notch too far back.
I have hauled allot of paper loads and water loads in the past few months though, and I have it in that hole because when I have a full front heavy load it will keep my steers just under 12k.
I do not like moving the 5th wheel unless I have no other option.
To slide the 5th wheel properly you need to lower your landing gear and get several good turns on it after they are taking up weight.
If you have too much weight on it when you try to slide it you will have issues with it binding and then slamming all the way forward and back.
It will be almost impossible to get it set where you need it.
Get that weight off and it will slide much better.
And once you have it set for a full load do not move it again unless you have too.
It is very rare that you will need to move it at all once set correctly.tntrucker14, Raincatcher, The Challenger and 2 others Thank this. -

My next load is a fun one. Right now I'm delivering to Beloit WI then I have to deadhead up to Ext 259 on I 94 to wash out my trailer. Then I drive down to Darien WI pick up a load at 1800. then driver it 1402 to SLC. Now I'm not even really sure that I can do it. I cant drive until the morning of the 26th the first stop is due at 7am on the 28th and the 99 is due at 1330. I'm gonna do everything I can to get it done cause it would be good money but I'm just not totally sure it seems more like a team load than a solo load.

As long as there is no snow or refer trouble I should be able to do it. even if I have to start driving at 00:00 on the 28th to get it done I will.
