also the tach is not right. with a hand held tach we got it up to 2100 rpm but the truck tach only says 1800 rpm.

same truck. pulled the map sensor. checked voltages. there is the 5 volt referance voltage and ground. and 6 volts on what i think is the signal wire or ground. If that sensor is not functioning properly will not add proper amount of fuel for the amount of boost checked. But not sure where the 6 volts is coming from whether it be ecm or short in harness

check the boots for a pin hole had mine looseing power so wrapped duct tape around the boots and found it fast a pin hole suckin air pulled a pin hole rite in the tape

okies just a suggestion as mine done that and fixed real fast after changein the boot tried lookin it up with cat to see what they said but nothin a friend suggested maybe a oring but im not sure that would do it so I think it may be a fuel line as a friend of mine had a problem and they found a bug in the line that restricted the flow.

How do you build 20 psi of boost at idle? I had one that give me fits and it turned out to be the boost presure sensor could not "see" the initial 1-5 psi boost. Hence no signal to ECM for boost,no more fuel rate increase. There is a different part number boost sensor for this engine in a Tech Tips issue. I'll try to find it and post it. But if you can apply 1-3 psi of boost and see if CAT ET can se it. (If you have it). If it doesnt see that small amount it will never see anymore to add fuel to the engine.( The truck will seem to pull out great on the low side but hit the high side and you just knew she was dead. This was in a Western Star I was troubleshooting) -

please clarify our boost pressures.
thanks. -
The boost pressures are you 0 at idle and the last one the our driver told me was 16 pulling a excavator on a trailer. There should be a potential of 30 lbs except we do have a winter blend diesel fuel. We scanned out computer and no codes were pulled.

update:
we struggled for along time and never really found anything that helped the truck out. finally i was at a BBQ with some cat mechanics and i asked if i could borrow their compression testing equipment (we had struggled and never found the proper tools to do it on the 3406E). the mechanics laughed and said try to bar the engine over. if it is too easy you will know it and you have no compression. we barred it over the next day with one hand on a twelve inch breaker bar. NO COMPRESSION!!! time for an overhaul.
i spent a lot of time figuring out what the best option was. finally i decided to bite the bullet and took the truck to Butler Cat in Bismarck, ND. they quoted me a price and said they could get it right in and that it would take a week.
$24,000 later (that is what i was quoted) the engine is overhauled, has a new rear main, has a new clutch, has a new front cover seal, new oil pump, new turbo, and is ready to go. everything Cat touched has a four year unlimited mile warranty without the need for any oil samples.
the truck runs good and i am happy to have it out there pulling 85,000 lb excavators again.
