Good stuff!!
I was up in MA last spring on 93/95 heading toward 90 to go pick up a load, passed by an old flatbedder on the side of the road. Looked at the empty flatbed and didn't see him until late. He was standing alongside of the road behind the skateboard trying to wave down truckers. Too late for me to slow down, but I figure he was in trouble. Went four miles to the next exit, turned it around, 7 miles back, flipped back around and came back up behind him.
All he needed was for someone to pull him to start. His starter was shot. Took me all but 6 minutes or so hooking his front hook to the DOT bumper on my trailer to pull him the required 8 feet to jump start him. Went to take the chain off and he's digging in his wallet to hand me cash.

Of course, I turned it down in shock. Told him that I thought that is the way truckers from his generation used to operate: just help drivers out without asking for money. It occured to me later that this must be a normal thing if he automatically went to his wallet for cash. Are drivers really putting their hands out for payment for things like that? I mean, I never carry much cash, usually just chump change. I use my card at the truck stops, so I would sure HOPE that someone would be willing to give me a tug if my starter died without having to be paid for it.TrailerTruckin, dino6960, dodge24v and 5 others Thank this. -
Well done sir. You probably made his week.
It's not just "that's the way truckers should act". It's the way we all should act.Ducks, mitrucker, Jarhed1964 and 3 others Thank this. -
Great reading! Iwill be heading out on the road in about 3 weeks. Not that I wouldnt stop and help someone, but it makes you wonder why we dont do more of it. You look at some couples out there and you rarely see a man open a door for a woman! I open the door for my wife all the time!!

I can name one old timer...SOUTHERNPRIDE! My dad was a trucker for 30 yrs..an this is how it was when i went with him. Now ,I am liveing my dream, i own my own truck an with a good company.....to me right now life dont get any better..The problemwith people now a days is they put more into things than what needs to be there.....an if you look at it this way, whats it gona cost you to lend a hand...trucking is a dirty buisness(meaning your gona get dirty ) thats what god made soap an water an clean cloths for.....or as my mom used to say, a little dirt never hurt anyone lol

Works for me. The day I feel like going past someone who is in trouble will be the day I hang my keys up. That said, I understand the pressures most people are under.dino6960 Thanks this.

When I started everybody did this. Bravo to you showing some people how a real trucker behaves.
dino6960 Thanks this.
