Deaftrucker, another option to experience a big rig is to go to a truck stop and find a willing trucker to help you out. (that sounded perverted!) You know what I mean! You could also go to the Crete/schaffer terminal right there in your home town and talk to a recruiter, tell them you are interested and could they help you out. I lucked out! When I was interested in driving a truck my local truck driving school actually had a trucking job fair. It was an excellent idea yet they haven't done it since then. They invited a representative driver from each company and some owner ops too. The drivers brought their trucks and let you sit in each one that you were interested in and they would talk about their driving job. It was THE COOLEST thing I had ever done! I remember the very first big rig I sat in it was a drivers truck from a company called honey transport. I sat in the drivers seat and looked in the mirror and could barely see the tail end of the trailer way back there! I'll tell you what, that school got my signature before the end of the day!

If you are seriously interested I really suggest you try one of these routes. Good luck, let us know how you make out. I am sure you will have more questions for us once you get the feeling for it!

You can go to any trucking company and ask about the different work enviroments that comes with each trucking job and pay , days off etc. My school gave a list of companies to call before I graduated !!! You freight , tanker ( food grade , hazmat, cement , oil , chemical, gas etc.), flat bed ( cement , steel, equipment, wood etc.) , truckload , line haul etc. Pay ( percentage, hourly , mileage , etc. Every job comes with its own set of challenges.
