The first company I thought of for this was R+L Carriers.

I have loaded additional cargo from the original shipper once. It made me over weight by 2000 lbs. I was paid cash by the shipper(enough to make it worth the hassle). I would never do it again and this load was going to original destination.

Biggest issue here is insurance. Artwork is verrrry expensive to insure. What looks like a child's scribbles could be a Piccaso worth millions. For that reason it has to be packed and handled very carefully by people who know what they're doing. Oil paintings, etc are ridiculous fragile and usually shipped temp controlled/climate controlled.
I'm surprised that the OP, claiming to be an artist, doesn't know that. -
The answer is "YES", you could find a driver you know that MAY drop off your artwork for you.
I have moved things for family, myself, and hauled items (even people) for money.
But don't be insulted if they insist on inspecting the "cargo".
Where I find fault with the plan, is where the item does not make destination and there is no paperwork showing it ever went on the truck.
You'll just be scrwd.
