A for hire tag- if you are a owner operator and leased to a company then you will get a for hire tag under there authority.

" owner operator tag " - you will have to have a apportioned registration. you are a owner operator and company owner. you have your own authority and can lease other owner operators onto your company they will have a for hire tag.

then you have to pay our uncle " SAM " I think it's about $530 per truck a year for heavy road use tax, your hauling logs so it will be less. if your truck will drive under 5k miles a year, you do not have to pay this tax.

If your going to be driving your truck in one state you can get a state tag. but if you leave the state you will need permits.

insurance- coverage varies contact the company you will be hauling cargo for and see how much they require.

" cheapest route starting out is logging " lease into a company ' use there authority " power only, use there trailer they provide insurance for there cargo and trailer you just need liability insurance
Get a state tag.. if your hauling logs i would assume you will run 1 state. get tag for state only. if under 5k miles in a year file exempt on your heavy road use forum. get insurance. bobtail, cargo ect..

This should be correct, but it's been awhile that i was o/o

thanks that was pretty much what i was looking for so everything the people i WAS hauling for was not telling me the whole story but thats not a problem no more because i quit yesterday and i will be hauling logs in 2 or 3 weeks, i will be running in one state and i do not have to hit the interstate which brings me to my next question if i dont hit the interstate and stay in one state are you REQUIRED to have a dot and mc number i have them know there just not active yet because they dont become active till i get my tag and file for the ifta sticker when i filed for my dot number that was when i started to get confused with all of the forms and requirements i was doing good until i got all of that because when i filed for my athority was when the cost of this went sky high mainly because of insurence because you are required to keep a minimum amount i am going to go to the log yard tomarrow and talk them about some of this i was just really trying to figure some of this out before i go and talk to them i know i dont need a for hire tag now and that was what i thought i needed and that was why my insurance was going to be so high so hopefully everything will be cheaper! thanks again

Sounds good HB. Talk to the guys that are doing it and maybe drive for a couple of then for a bit first. If nothing else you'll have a better idea about what you need for equipment. Hauling gravel and salt is rough on the truck and stuff like tires. What's good for OTR freight is a PITA in that application so be careful what you buy.

im sure you kno that there are alot of used trucks around here and some are pretty dodgy to say the least but bein the rust belt i guess it is expected to. my neighbor has 3 tractor trailers and 3 or 4 tandem dumps plus other equipment so i MIGHT be able to get work with him for a little while.

what is that $30k fine or something for operation without registration? something stupid like that.

if you're hauling for pay you need a commercial plate. if you don't leave the state you can just get a state plate. if you cross state lines you need an apportioned plat and in IL I know it's $1800 a yr. for mine. I pay $650/mo for insurance

You will need a dot number number! if you run in one state only, you will not need a mc number. you got to have a dot number no matter what!! going on state roads or interstate does not matter. if you operate a commercial vehicle you have to have one.

If you are power only " just own a truck " you can lease onto a company with there own authority. they will provide you with a dot number.

Most power only o/o get about 70% gross income.

if you run in one state only you don't need a ifta. and no one should have to pay for this tax!
