I have a new cobra 29 chrome edition mated with a 4 1/2 ft metal whip antenna. The radio is stock and I set the swr. On channel one the swr does not move. On channel 40 it is at about half way to one. When receiving it sounds broken and distorted but if I flip the switch from s/rf down to swr it comes in very clear. On either setting I have had no complaints on how I sound.

But another part is I was talking to a man I know to have a really good radio with strong amp and he sounded clear on both s/rf and swr. But he is the only one. And yes I know that the swr setting is for checking them it was coincidence that I found that it received clearer on swr. I originally thought the radio was a lemon.

CORRECT SWR IS USED TO TUNE THE ANTENNA.

It should have no effect on how the radio works otherwise MAYBE I'm miss reading what is going on here ... :biggrin_2556:

What you are saying makes no sence ....
The ONLY thing I can think of is your SQUELCH control on ???? turn it untill you hear background noise and recheck ....

Yes I guess you are all mis reading what I ment. The radio talks good I have had no complaints on that side. The problem is on receiving side. With swr set to the antenna as they are supposed to be. And with switch (s/rf.swr.cal) set to s/rf as it is supposed to be when using the radio the signal coming in is broken and distorted. With everything else remaining the same (person im talking to.distance they are from me. Squelch and rf gain) eveything being exactly the same I flip the (s/rf.swr.cal) switch to swr and instantly they are crystal clear. I do not know what to change so that with it on s/rf like it is supposed to be it sounds clear.

Forgot to add that yes it will talk out with it on s/rf or on swr, makes no difference. Now I do notknow if that matters or not.

sounds to me like you should take it to a shop and have them check it out and maybe tune the antenna for you too....something just doesn't add up here
