I am an Old School Trucker. I took 13 years off to help my wife finnish raising the kids. Been back in the truck for a little over a year and the company asked me to become a trainer.

My question is this. Under new HOS regs, we must stay within a 14 hour work day. Our Safety department told me that as a trainer, I must sit up and awake in the jump seat while the trainee drives. However, they also told me that if I start driving after a 34 hour reset, I can drive my 11 hours, then sit in the jump seat for another 11 hours while the trainee is driving, which would mean that my logs would show me as driving for 11 hours, on duty not driving for 11, meaning I have been working for 22 of the first 24 hours out. This seems to me that it would be a gross violation of the 14 hour rule. Can anyone "please" help me to clear this up once and for all in my own mind?

Their example is as follows..... If you go to work at a factory and load your truck for 2 hours, then drive 5.5 hours, spend 1 hour unloading and then drive 5.5 hours back, that is your 11 hours of drive time plus 3 hours of on duty not driving, and you should be able go back into the factory and work more hours. It does not compute in my head, as it would go beyond the 14 hours on duty if you were to go back in and work in the factory..... I feel like I am caught in a HOS loop here, and am feeling quite frustrated to boot.

They are correct in informing you which I am very suprised as many companies are not telling the drivers they can be on line 4 past their 14th hour. Please visit the Trucking Regulatios thread and I have personally posted a thread regarding being on line 4 past your 14th hour.
Now what I suggest is that you make darn sure you are alert enough while your trainie is driving to help them. In all reality you can be on line 4 the rest of your life and not be in violation of the 11,14 or 70 hour rule. Now drive for 1 minute and you are in violation :).

I work at a reputable company in logs and have for 18 years or maybe longer since 1988.

FYI: Post log/safety questions on the trucker regulations and i usually check that first and daily at some point. I always try to answer you or get the answer if someone on the thread doesn't know.
