We had a lighting strike go thru everything I called customer service they paid to send the computer to them fixd it and returned it to me all with in 3 weeks. I have had it in the truck for 4 months and it has slid off the bed 2x and it still works great so ill never buy a nother brand:biggrin_25520:

I just brought an Acer and it's great. Vista I'm not happy with.

am on my toshiba, but would perfer a panasonic toughbook, cf-28/29/or 72 but it's a bit of green to get, and if you don't like vista, load xp or 2000 (it will not void the waranty, just the software support untill you re-load the system with vista)

I'll second Acer. Good value for what you get. Durability seems reasonable as well.

Real value would be in finding a slightly used laptop and getting a fair discount though. But you need to be careful. Some people out there will try to sell a used laptop for 80% or more of the cost of it NEW even if it is way out of date. This is a ripoff. Hold out for a deal which is 50% of the cost of a comparable new computer of that class.

Here my advice on minimums at this time (Will be out of date by 2008):

Processor: 1.6 Ghz and faster (duo core better)
Memory: 1GB and up (2.0 GB Better, especially with vista)
Hard Drive: 80 GB and up

Get a LAN port and a wireless card built in.
Also get a good DVD Burner built in.

Virus scanner: free DOT grisoft DOT com (free)
    Anti-spyware: spywareteminator DOT com (free)

(seems silly not to be able to post links to help people)
