Being in business for myself. The people that brought me taking days off that I want. And being responsible for what happened with the freight.
Union? Meh....What stops you from negotiating your own good work situation?
Paid not to work. What a concept!
Happy Easter! -

Your comment sounds like some of the BS that floats around at truck stop coffee counters. Since you are a "newbie", let me assure you that anything put on your trailer is not legally yours to take off. Always remember this, transportation pickup or delivery delays are logistic problems that could or could not involve detention pay or a changed rate BUT anything you do with that freight involves interstate theft and becomes a cargo insurance policy issue. Taking something off the trailer is theft and you or your company's cargo insurance now becomes liable. AND with the name on the door I don't think it would take long for them to track you down. -
Moving on Down the Road and jbatmick Thank this.

My company has a policy, at 2hrs we start charging detention $65 to $75 an hr depending on the customer. If I tell a customer they are now on detention and being charged for it, and they balk, I notify dispatch. If they argue with dispatch, he tells me to clear them from my trailer, pull out, reseal it, and wait for further instructions. In 13 yrs I've done that maybe 5 times and it's always resolved with them paying for my detention. Only once did we have a customer refuse, they called the cops and said I was stealing their product. When the cops showed up, I had them talk to my boss, the cops told me to have a nice day and the customer to work it out, and left.
The AB facility in Denver, there are two of them, we deliver containers to both. The main DC is never more than 90 minutes in/out. The wharehouse, which they are supposed to close, I sat for 4 hrs one day. They didn't touch me til the 3rd hour, they paid for the detention without issue. -
it seems like drivers rush too much, here at least. they are pushed so hard to get the load there on time, that they have to run like a chicken with their head cut off.
that makes you take turns fast, and accelerate really fast, which will dump a load. -
cooperations need regulations, they need to price their things at what a small company can, IT IS UNFAIR TO THE SMALL GUYS OUT THERE PERIOD!! smaller business's need less regulations so they can grow. at smaller companies no one benefits from treating employees like crap at all!! every single good business owner knows its in their best interest to HOLD ON to their good guys at all costs even if they F up. unlike these union workers who know full well they can screw up, dont care, because they wont get fired and they know it. i dont need no #### ####### union to help me, if i make a mistake, i own up to it, take full responsibility, and do my absolute best to correct. my latest example; we picked up a few new customers on my route, as i'm about to finish up my day and hit this new customer i realize O CRAP!! i dont have her orange juice!! so i get on the phone, call my last couple grocery stores. turns out i screwed up, and brought this ladies orange juice to the grocery store. so what do i do?? i drive out to the grocery store which was a total of 40 minutes of driving, just to get her stuff. it ended up i didnt get out of work until 2:30. i would of gotten out at 12:30ish if i hadnt made that mistake. and i'm on salary, so it didnt help me none, but i made the mistake, i should fix it so this lady can run her business. when i got in my boss asked me how my day went i told him about that and he just said "good man thanks for doing that". i'm not saying there arent hard working union people out there, i think it is the union boss's that are the problem.
