So, I just finished school friday and obtained my CDL from the Advanced School of Driving in Fontana, CA sponsored by CRST. School was very advanced, there is a standard you got to keep in order to obtain your CDL from this school if being tested by the instructors on site. Basically you have to drive okay...not perfect but cannot have the instructor intervene or help out in any way during your over the road test, or you will instantly fail and have to retest later that day or next day. Dont let this scare you, they do want you to pass, and will work with you even a whole extra week in efforts that you will pass. If you are low on money they will give you a care package on a daily basis to help with lunch, and on Fridays they BBQ hot dogs and give out chips. Overall the school was great, Juan is the best instructor there, and the others are good as well, but Juan relates to all students in a way that makes people feel comfortable. The only crappy thing is waiting for your bus to go back to the hotel. CRST only provides one bus that holds nine students and at times there are 20 people that need a ride. Yeah 3 trips and waiting until 5 p.m if you don't feel like rushing the bus like a crazed Justin Beeber fan.
Now for me, schooling went well, I caught on fast and was double clutching up and down the first day very solid. My only weakness was that I was shifting too fast. So by Friday I had this slowed down so I would pop right in gear without a noise or grind. I didnt miss any on the skills test, missed 6 out of 22 on the pre trip, missed 15 out of 45 on the over the road test. Most of them were turning too wide...I mean that's fine with me lol as long as i don't curb it and get an instant fail. Unfortunetly I got sick with the flu thursday and right about now I am feeling miserable. Orientation starts tomarrow and I will keep everyone posted if you guys have any comments or questions let me know.

I went to Advance School of Driving in Fontana and did the CRST program out of Fontana as well. Don't expect to make a lot of money with those guys. If you used them to get your CDL then complete your contract and get the hell out. I had a 6 month contract, only drove for them for 4 months and took a "leave of absence" to work another job so I can finally pay my bills. Came back for a month to fulfill my contract on it's end date, then left.
They never paid me my final check, took all the money and said it was to pay back school fees. Then put me in collections over $40. CRST is a joke. -
Hey Californiaguy, I see that you are out of Lodi, ru moving down to the Fontana area and do you have a team picked out. I'm out of the Davis area and starting school on the 28th and relocating down to the Hunnington beach area. I want to drive for 5 to 6 months straight to put some money away before I get a place so that means no bills. After that I want to go on the 20/10 program unless I'm disappointed w/crst. I heard so many good/more bad about the company but either way it boils down to yourself making the decision. Hope to get a reply from you

Cash side is 2500.00 right? How much is the contract side and can you pay it off early and leave? Can they legally keep your last paycheck? And where are you working now?
-
I don't remember, it's been 6 years since I went through that. You can break your contract but you will have to pay back your school fees and then some to CRST. I'm sure they can't legally not pay me, but for the petty amount it wasn't worth any headache in going after it. I said F it, and let it slide just so I don't have to deal with their BS any more.
I'm a Jumbo Screen Technician who happens to have a CDL now so I don't move any freight except for company owned equipment and gear. I load my truck with the gear I need, take it to the venue, set it up, let the show run, strike the equipment, load my truck back up, and head back to the shop. I love my job.mauidave22 Thanks this. -
That is where I went to school back in 07. I didn't go CRST though, I paid for it myself. Yes, you are right Juan is a great trainer.
The staff there is nice, very helpful, and I personally witnessed them doing everything they could to get a CRST trainee fixed up so she could pass (she didn't, she couldn't stop making turns in neutral). I definitely recommend this school for anyone in SoCal.
They still running those old FL's?
