I don't do those things so I can't really speak to that. That's a reflection of society as whole though. New drivers aren't brought in the way it was in your day so the whole learning process is different I imagine. It seems like a lot, not all, of the old pro's have given up on us and instead of just setting us straight they shake their heads and resign themselves to how things have become. When asked though, it seems a lot love to talk and 'teach' so maybe it's just up to us to be asking.

By not doing the things mentioned above. By being a safe and courteous driver. By helping others when I can. By not judging anyone based on the name on the door, the number of chicken lights on the truck, or their ethnicity. By learning what I can by asking questions, listening, reading and watching. We've got some guys with as many years as you and it's amazing how much they can pass on without even realizing it sometimes.

Tinytim, I ran into a long time driver yesterday who after realizing I wasn't asking him to back in my truck gave me the guidance I needed to back it in..

I agree instead of all the snide and obnoxious remarks how about some help.. maybe people need to be reminded - they were new once upon a time.. I am not perfect, but I am getting better and it's thanks to the more experienced drivers.. I look at a situation and say how can I use what he or he showed me ..

    tinytim and allniter Thank this.

Yep! Some of us/Most of us have given up on trying to help...

I used to walk over and offer to help when I'd see a guy having difficulty, But after getting and endless list of smart assed replies...I stopped doing that!
I'm more than willing to help someone that asks for help and I will go out of my way to do that...But unfortunately most that have gone to school have been "taught" by their "instructors" that all of us long time drivers are just slightly better than axe murderers and that our advice is to be shunned.
So what you wind up with is an industry that's upside down....Where the majority of newbies coming in actually believe that they know better than the guys that have been out here for years. The sad thing is that the "so called" teachers that should be telling them to seek the advice of more experienced drivers are the very ones that tell them not to.

So now, Unless they ask for a hand with something, I will just let them flounder around and eventually fail at this and hopefully go home and do something that requires less thought than driving a truck.

There might be some hope for some of you guys yet....

You just described nearly every O/O I have ever paid attention to.

If you "long timers" are so great why are there agencies trying to over-regulate the industry ?

And why, for the love of Pete, can't O/O's park in a freakin' space ? Every night it's the same thing. The entry to the Rest Area is packed with long nosed idiot mobiles that nearly choke off access to the open 15 parking spaces inside the Rest Area.

The new drivers represent Change. The Long Timers are the reason we exist. Get over yourselves.

The agencies are over regulating because of idiots like the safety groups that don't have the first clue as to what it takes to be a truck driver sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong. They are control freaks that think that big rigs are noisy, dirty, pollution machines.

AS far as parking, idiots are the ones that don't park in the proper places. I have seen both O/O's and company drivers parked in places where they shouldn't be. Part of that problem is the John Q Public mentality of 'Not In My Backyard'.

Most of the O/O's I know are good drivers, with good records that don't do stupid crap. You get idiots in every industry. The new drivers do not represent 'Change'. Get over yourselves.

    Seriously?
Perhaps you're not paying much attention at all and are instead reacting to a comment that was made about a group that you happen to be a part of and are attempting to defend with some rather clueless arguments.

    Money...

How do you know their all O/O's? Did you knock on their doors and ask?
Or are you once again defending the indefensable behavior of the newbies by lashing out blindly with unfounded accusations against the more experienced drivers?

This was overall a pretty clueless post and very eloquently represents the problem I'm talking about with the "attitude" that many, many newbies have.

The sad part is that you actually believe this nonsense!

    Well put...

    Again, Well put...

Again, Well put with one exception.

The new drivers don't necessarily "represent" change but they are changing things with the "attitude" that's on display in the post that we're both responding to and that's not good for the industry or for anyone in the industry!
