Well, I just picked up my Midland 5001Z ($50 clams..woo..hoo!) and am now looking for a CB antenna. I have decided to get either the Firestik II FS5-B or a Francis Hot Rod cb25 4.5 ft. Opinions of either?

Nik, I am doing a temporary install in my pickup just to get it operational and tuned with an antenna. When I am finished with training in a couple months, I'll move it a company truck. If it is a Volvo, I will probably perch mount the antenna, unless you have a better suggestion.

Well no not any better suggestions I was just curious as to where you were using it....like some else said for pickups you COULD use a monster tall whip.....how are you going to mount the antenna...a magnet or do a hard install on the pickup?

And remember that when you put your antenna on a company truck you are kind of limited to where you can install it......and GOOD coax isn't cheap.

On my pick up, since it is temporary, I will do a mirror mount (drivers side?) and get the antenna as high as I can over the roof. I really don't need to do this before leaving for school; I just want to get the SWR set and learn the ins and outs of the radio. In regards to the placement of the antenna on a company truck, mounting it on a bracket to a perch into the mirror bolt for grounding is one suggestion I noted. With perch placement, a few forum members say mount it on the drivers side (for low trees clearance, etc.), but others say the passenger side is better since that door isn't opened and closed all the time and won't affect the coax as much(?). As for the CB placement itself, I guess I won't know until I am assigned a tractor, and whether dash or overhead is easier on a Volvo, Freightliner or International. As I stated, I am definitely open to suggestions from experienced hands.

Well with the freightshakers and corn row Cadillac's I drove the cb went up top...on the KW I drove it was a dash mount.

All the truck I drove had the mirror mounts so I never dealt with a perch. I have seen them primarily on the .......hell now I don't remember ........I can understand NOT putting it on the passenger side....a fiberglass antenna will snap really easy when a tree branch gets it.......one reason why I like whips now......remember you are trying to get your signal across the road and ahead of you....I would suggest drivers side for that reason alone...BUT I don't know a whole lot about radio waves and how they are affected.

You will have to reset the VSWR when you install it on the other truck.

It is better to have it on the passenger side as far as performance reasons. On the drivers side you have little to no ground plane in that direction to help pull your signal that way. So the passenger side is better if you are trying to send signal towards the drivers side. But then you have to watch out for trees etc.

The absolute best along the center line of the roof and slightly back from the front. This gives you more groundplane to deal with. I see alot of skateboard pullers with antennas mounted right behind the sleeper in the center of a headack rack. Not the best option if you are pulling a van or refeer though.

I run a cophased setup on the furthest edge of the mirrors. This give me a little better forward and rearward performance. I loose a little to the sides but I still get out more then ten miles in any direction so no biggie.

I'll set the Firestick II on a mirrror perch mount and see how it performs there. Appreciate the suggestions.

Well you talk about a Volvo, well if everything on the volvo is in good shape such as the coax etc then there is really no need to purchase a perch mount or antennas for that matter.

Our company has a bunch of volvos in the fleet and they are all running the stock coax and antennas and they do pretty good actually. Especially with a unmodified radio. If you get a Volvo then get the stock setup checked out to be sure that it is in good working order. If all is good but you still need antennas then slap in some new antennas such as the 5fters and be done with it.

Heck one of our drivers is running one of them 39.95 Cbs I can't remember which one but it is one of them little black ones with just the basic functions. I checked out the coax etc for him and found a faulty antenna. I had some 5ft wilson fiberglass that I wasn't using so I installed them, did a quick SWR check and off he went. I have heard him talk from over 7 miles away and he sounded pretty good actually. His radio used the regular 4 pin mic setup such as the cobras and unidens so we set him up with an astatic 636 mic and he sounds even better yet. He has no complaints about the ears on the radio as it does just as good as most other radios.
