Shifter has a red button, not a splitter or H/L range

Unless things have changed, most of the old two speed rear axles were electric ( Pull up & push down plunger type switch with wires attached to the bottom ) and they tended to shift more slowly during cold weather....versus warm weather.

 

I owned two Farmalls with two speed rears and my bozo hired guns knocked them out on a regular basis... good luck.

 

brings back memories........yes they will grind like crazy if shifted wrong. That is the tranny I learned on.

and the one we had was electric. It would of course die in lo range. Lol

 

I called those short shift 5 speeds. What you could do when pulling heavy up a hill was shift to 4 lo, then to 5 lo, pull button and shift back to 4th, which is now 4 hi, then 5 hi. You get some very close ratios doing that, and will help you out. I've owned five trucks with the short gears, really liked them.

 

Ya I learned that trick too. I didnt bring it up because hes new to the two speed thing but if it were the type to skip a gear the 4th low to 5th low then back to 4th hi then 5th hi did work. He said its a 6 or 7 with a 2 speed. Never seen a 7 and 2 but I have seen a 6 and 2. I didnt drive it but I think it was the type that skiped a rear end split in 5th.
