I'm noticing it more and more ever since I got that ticket.... The scaleman was right! Every tier of pipe should be separated by wood. Especially those extra couple pipe sitting on top. Pyramiding the pipe is a different story... In that case you can just throw a couple belly wraps around the front and back and some more straps distributed around the rest of the load. The load I'm hauling right now is a prime example of how pipe should be strapped. (excuse my ####iness; but this cowboy ain't gettin no more tickets). I have some pictures on my iPhone. Anyone know how to upload them? GOODBYE turkeys! My attorney will be in touch.

Your suppose to throw a couple of straps on EACH tier !!!! The loose few loose ones he had on top without dunnage wasn't the issue. I've hauled many loads of pipe and strap each tier. NEVER had a problem thru scales. The DOT man was right on citing him. According to the driver he STRAP the hold load all together. He didn't strap each tier, THATS THE ISSUSE HERE !!!!!!!!

I remember once, shortly after my hubby had left this one company, running across one of the company's Newbs. He had a load of pipe, and was finishing up strapping a load of pipe. I stopped and told him he needed to belly strap that load. That what he had going was NOT going to work! Fool looked at me and told me that I was nothing more than some driver's wife, and to leave him alone. Well, with his attitude, I wasn't going to stand there and argue. It would do no good. I shrugged my shoulders and told him it was his ticket and left.

LMAO!! Less than an hour later, as I was coming back, I ran across that driver! His load was ALL OVER the highway, there were 3 CHP out there, AND the Boss! I stopped to see if I could do anything to help, and watched as that boy got one Hell of a ticket! I talked to the Bossman later, and he just about choked when I told him that I had warned that driver. Told me net time I saw one of his drivers do something that Iwould classify as stupid and dangerous, to please call him, cause that little incident cost HIM $12,000

i go by a saying I made up " if indought throw another strap" or chain what ever it takes. it take about ten minutes to throw an extra strap and to roll it and put it away it takes alot of time to pay that ticket or stand around if you are lucky while your load is being picked up off the road.

I was the one that got the ticket. The issue was the extra pipe, not separated by dunnage, sitting on the top tier. I had 16 straps on the load (seriously). Each separate tier had a MINIMUM of at least 3 straps on. 95% of drivers don't separate the last few pipe from the top tier. Take a look at it next time.... The extra pipe sitting on the top inhibit the final straps from providing downward pressure on a number of pipes. Even if there's only one extra pipe sitting on the top tier, there's at least 2 pipes underneath it that don't have any contact with straps; therefore making them insecure. The pipe I picked up in Houston yesterday left me with 4 tiers of 16 pipe, plus 2 extras. I have the 2 extras separated by dunnage, 2 belly wraps, and 2 over the tops. (the loader operator looked at me like I was nuts).

OK I'll be the idiot and ask as I don't drive flatbed nor have I ever. can some show a pic of a belly wrap? does just go around pipe or is it trailer and pipe? excuse my ignorance I'm just not too proud to ask in case I ever have to do it.

belly wrap is used on a lower tier to create a solid foundation for the rest of the load. It's trailer and pipe. Circle or gut wrap goes around just material to hold loose stuff together.
