Well; a lot goes with a truck strike. Biggest problem is most people have no clue what they would strike for. Fuel, taxes, idling laws, or a million other issues. A lot of people rant and rave and it sounds like a mob riot. Few know why, just grab a brick and toss it through the store window. I have heard people say block the roads, freeways etc. What about the ambulance that was trying to save your mom, dad, brother, sister, wife or kid? They just died because the ambulance could not get to them. Another issue. Pay is too low and you are going to lose everything because of low pay. That makes sense park and not make anything. That will surely help your money situation.
People have the mindset that trucking is lumped into one company. If trucking company A that you was an employee of was shorting your pay. A strike would effect company A. Don't forget about the rest of the alphabet and each 100 companies beginning with that letter. Maybe company C is treating and paying drivers well. Now company C can't afford to pay well because they have a 100 trucks with notes they owe on. So company C will now hire all the newbies and others with all the other companies and pay you 27 CPM.
Look at all the companies that strike a lot. GM was one. Most have folded up. Moved out of the States. Or the ones that was paying 20- 30 bucks an hour are now paying 8 bucks per hour. Goodyear was on strike down here for a good while. Yep they settled that. They just announced a couple days ago the plant is closing. Striking would not be so bad if it wasn't spouted off by a bunch of whacko's all the time. Listen to the ranting on the CB or read the writings on message boards. Most sound anything but educated. Most sound like cave man gonna club big lizard in head fer supper....
How about going beyond the next thought. Shutting down will it get the meds to the people who need them to stay alive? What about all the other life threatening issues it will cause. The big trucking strike years ago resulted in people throwing concrete blocks off of over passes at trucks running down the road. A strike is not going to do nothing but make things worse in trucking. There is no chain of command. No leaders, no union reps for drivers. No spokesperson. No nothing. It is not a level entry job. No way to control anything in a shut down.mycorky, panhandlepat and Bumpy Thank this. -

I had a friend who used to be pro OOIDA until he needed their services. They made a phone call to his former company, they were told to get lost. He was then told he was on his own...
They are good for information that I and many others are to lazy or busy to look up, but other than that they are just glory hounds.
On the MN lawsuit, didn't some other law firm start that or someone else and then OOIDA jumped on board when they realized they was gonna get somewhere? -
Les2 Thanks this.

The lawsuit was filed by OOIDA for their member Stephen K House.
Much more info would be needed to determine if your buddy had a legitimate complaint, or just frivolous bs he got himself into. But in general no OOIDA will not get between an employee and an employer unless it involves lease regulations, or other regulated practices.
Say your buddy was fired for to many late deliveries and he claimed it was due to dispatch's scheduling causing it. OOIDA will not step in, that is not their purpose.
That was only an example. But in general OOIDA will advise you and give you recommendations on dealing with an employer but will not do any negotiating on your behalf with an employer or lessor. They will however review members leases to assure compliance with truth in leasing laws and for predatory practices prior to a member signing it. But once you sign it and if it is legal they figure you made your decision and get to live with the consequences.
So in summation you hauled cheap freight instead of sticking to a rate you knew you needed to be profitable and are upset that someone got you to do it?????
I'm sure a strike would help you become a better business man -
If I under priced a car or any thing else why would I be mad at someone that took advantage of a good deal? It's just good sense. I'm glad you don't worry about it and really hope you do fine with him. If you haul directly for the shipper you can give him a break on what he paid a broker and still make out.
Some time's I come on a little strong on a subject there was no offense or put down ment -
I always hear where OOIDA is a leader at the forefront of a issue?
If they(OOIDA) is looking out for all of us,where is the proof in the pudding?,Oh yeah they do once in a while win a case for a certain few(Mostly OO's) but where is the "Industry Impact"?
Here we are and yet again for the third time in less than 8 years the HOS and rules of the road are being changed yet again and where were you and I in the equation? They didnt ask us,they didnt even bother to study the total impact CSA2010 will do to you and me in the bottom line.
OOIDA,TCA,Teamsters, they are all the same, talk a good talk but in the end dont walk the walk, otherwise all of us out here on the road wouldnt be ranting and raving on the CB or in the truckstops. -
OOIDA fought against csa2010, fought to keep the split sleeper etc... what did you do?
##### and complain on the c.b.? call your reps in d.c.? participate in the opinion polls?
160,000 members is alot, but not enough. we need a bigger voice, like the nra, patt and crash have.
so what harm would it do for you to join? to send some $$ to the political pact?
it's one thing to go to d.c. and say we have 160,000 members, it's another hear from them all.
how much money does the ata have? patt? crash? way more than OOIDA.
but who is there fighting for you? ata? yea right, maybe if your name is swift or hunt.
patt? crash? don't think so.
OOIDA? yes they do. but they're a guppy swimming with sharks.
so instead of bad mouthing what you don't know, or heard about on the c.b., join and help. help yourself and other drivers.
they have limited resourses so they do have to be picky about what they pursue in the courts, and they've won the ones they've taken to court.
they have lobbyists in dc, and we all know how the system works in dc, the ones with the biggest pockets has the loudest voice.
so why not help make them pockets bigger?
