    I need the following specs:

48" dry van, lateral doors, liftgate, semi-transparent roof, belly box, 12'6" overhead or lower, air ride.

Right now my employer has trailers that meet about half of those requirements but none that meet all. I've been complaining about when we'll get the "right tool for the right job" but it'd be nice to know just what a trailer like this would cost.

I'm of the opinion that in this down economy, now would be a better time to pick up a used piece of equipment, but maybe spec-ing one out from an mfg might be an option too.

Anyone have any ideas on this please give me a shout.

trailer you describe is really easy to find good.

Mi friend got built in Odessa Mond trailer last year. He had now belly box and he add it himself.

Choosing a used trailer is not so easy deal. Pay attention on all. First I start with is box and frame/chassis (i'm not sure what trailer will you find, frameless ore with full lenth frame), inspect doors, locks, floor for damage. Inspect trailer for geometry and symmetry. Some operators overload and it may be cracked ore bent.

If you like box, start with suspention and axes. I'd like to get trailer with ROR/Meritor axes, better round axes, not square like SAF ore BPW. by the way SAF and Meritor may use maintanaceless bearings with plastic covers. SAF provide lifetime warranto for bearins and if there is no play and plastic cover of bearing is not damaged/melt with overheating be sure, bearing is OK.

Things like kingpin, brake shoes, bracke chambers, rods are easy to change and not so expencive, so if you see some of these things worn ask seller to lower price.

Air system of trailer is easy to check for air leak, look at air bags too.

Check suspenton brakets for cracks and welding works. If you see chassis/suspentions parts bee weld, it is better to choose other trailer.

ABS system: try to find trailer with Wabco vario VCS-II - it is very reliable system and usually it fails with broken wires, corroded connectors ore bent tone rings. It is reliable thing. Knorr/Bendix TABS is good too. About haldex - I do not like it, but it works.

one more thing looking easy to fix, but may be a real headache - wiring! If you see marker lamp wont working, it may be broken hidden wire somewhere deep under the box and it is a pain to find where is it broken and how to fix.

I see you are near Reading Pa--check with Jilco trailer--www.jilco.com
they are in Cranberry and S. Glouster NJ--they do a lot of foodservice business--and sell off lease stuff. Friend of mine just picked up a former MBM trailer from them--04--4side doors-rear roll up w/tuckaway lift gate--3 unit multi-tmp tk. Hope this helps.
If you are gonna go new or adapt one check with EBY in New Holland--I know they advertise mostly bulk and bullrack BUT most of the custom dane reefer(chicken trucks) you see in central Pa EBY has customized
    Just my $.02
