landstar isent bad but as far as lumpers depends on what you are pulling flats no charge for unloading vans you eat the cost you are a lease operator its your truck so they are not responsible for it.some of the customers may have an account with them so you might get lucky.and the charges vary ive paid over 350.00 for a breakdown of a load and 75.00 for a straight pull off
GypseRose Thanks this. -
if you dont want to deal with lumpers as far as paying for it go flat bed its better money just dirtier.if I was to go back to flats Id go mercer.

Thanks I appreciate the info. It just seems that with the deadhead miles, along with the cost of lumper fees. Leaves me with even more questions???? I suppose the BIGGEST question is can u really make more money than a company driver? Does Landstar pay for tolls? I have serveral questions but I might better stick to 1 at a time. Thanks again for your input !

Sometimes it is best to call the company up & ask them the questions. But let me tell you.... If you don't have your hazmat, don't waste your breath with LandStar.

no, it is in the rate. You pay, you ain't a company driver anymore. Most freight that requires lumpers is not the best anyway.
Do you think they will hire you? They are very paticular about who they lease, 1or 2 out of 100 apps is all they hire. Call them and talk.
As for making more than a company driver, some do, some don't.GypseRose Thanks this. -
Yes , Redd I am Hazmat Endorsed, But sometimes I think its just not worth the risk & headache. At times I think about dropping that endorsement , but I know it looks good on a resume' when you what companies to consider you for employment. I also have Tanker & Triple/Doubles endorsements.

Old Man , I just dont know...I've been a company driver for 8 years , NO ACCIDENTS woohoo! I have hazmat, tanker, doubles endorsements. But I've never owned my owen truck, I have always been to afraid. I have a house & land mortgage & all the other payments that go along with owning a home. So I have been to scared to buy a truck & all the payments that go along with it. I only owe about 1 more year on my land but about 16 more yrs on the house.
I have learned alot from each company I have worked for & I feel I am ready to own my own truck. But I'm not willing to lose house/home for it. I am still in the investigating stage... before I take that LEAP OF FAITH . -

Rose.........If you have a Hazmat endorsement and a tanker endorsement,go pull a tanker. You'll end up making as much money running company tankers.
If your stressed about potentially not being able to pay your bills now.......how will you feel once you're in a truck and running down the road?
Indian river tank lines is south of you in Winter Haven.
Whatever you decide.....I hope you find something you like.GypseRose Thanks this.
