Ok so about two weeks ago I went in for some lessons on the pre trip and air brake inspection. My instructor was really cool and explained everything really well. He said If I would have taken the test that day I would have passed the pre trip inspection easily. Although I'm still having trouble with the 4 point air brake inspection. I know the basics of the test, but I forgot some of the smaller steps and details of the test. For example when to turn off the parking break, when to put it back on. I tried looking online for the steps, but they don't match the way he showed me. Btw this is for a class b license and I'm testing on a flatbed truck. Does anyone know where I can find this info, it would be great appreciated.

WOW, Rerun, this is a great post! Even if not 100% specific to all states, it is definitely good study material while I wait to head to school.
-
i keep telling people i kinda know what i am doing.....
not too many believe me...and i am tired of forever having to prove myself... -
This link may help, I know it's not quite what your looking for, but it may help.

Thanks for the replies guy, but this is the way I remember him showing me.
Step 1-With my engine and parking on I wait for my vehicle to build up to normal psi 85-100 psi. I then put my foot on the accelerator and build up pressure until the governor cuts out which needs to be between 100-140 psi.
Step 2- I'm now going to check the air leakage rate. I turn off the engine, leave the electricity on, and release the parking break (stupid question, but what holds the vehicle in place if the parking break isn't on? Do I need to put it into neutral?) I am now going to put my foot on the brake pedal for one minute and see that it does not lose more than 3 psi in one minute.
From here I don't know if I leave the engine off, turn it back on?
Step 3- So now I'm going to pump my brake pedal and see that my warning signal comes on before 60 psi.
Step 4- I will continue to pump the brake pedal until the spring brakes come on within 20-45 psi.
So yeah, that's the way I understood the 4 point air brake inspection. I think there are some mistakes in there, but that's why I'm posting it here. I'm so close to getting my cdl, but this is still holding me back. Once again if you guys could just read this and let me know what mistakes I've made I'd be very grateful. -
you obviously DID NOT READ what i had originally posted about the brake test, you know the 5 page description i posted here, just after you asked for help...???
it explained IN DETAIL what to do to prevent the truck from rolling when you release the brakes....
since my very detailed, and concise posting of the brake testing was too much for some to read, i had it deleted by a mod....you may have now missed out on some valuable hints/tips....which i will not re-post. -
85-100?? thats news to me. i thought it was 120-130??

Some attitude you got there. We're here to teach and help and if you've had your feelings hurt so be it. I've been told a few times I was wrong and if I was I admitted to it and went on. You not right 100% of the time ,none of us are, but your information is needed by some so grow up.
To the OP. I went on-line and searched "CDL Manual IL" then I went down to "Commercial Drivers License". There you can go down to pre-trip and it will allow you to go to the CDL Study Guide section 10 which tells you how to do the pre-trip for air brakes. If you stick to Illinois and what is written then you shouldn't have any problems passing the test.
Just relax and study the tips. They all know you'll be nervous so just slow down take your time and you'll make it.AsphaltPilot, Bankrobba, otherhalftw and 1 other person Thank this. -
maybe its just a new england mind set or something, but i fully 100% know where rerun was coming from. he took time to post a very informative response, only to have it barely read and basically looked over. its an insult for sure and i would take it the same way.

i am so glad you like my attitude, i can see you like me....that's cool....thanks....!!
you too obviously did not see my very detailed brake test, as it was 5 pages LONG in every stinking detail in how to do a proper brake test...the o/p apparently FAILED TO READ the very FIRST step or two which EXPLAINED WHAT TO DO, and he CAME BACK HERE A SECOND TIME, asking WHAT TO DO...???
WTF more could i have done...??
so i asked that my VERY DETAILED brake test be deleted...
good enough for you,...????
ask Lilibit what it was like, i asked her to delete it...ask the other who "thanked me" for posting it how detailed it was...
in other words, please Shut up if you have NO idea of what you speak....
thank you.....
that brake test (and the class A brake test) took several days to compose, in order and re-write and copy, it took a lot of MY TIME AT HOME to do this and in painstakingly detail, and i might add, i never was compensated for it either.....other than a "great job, keep it up, this is what our students need"......
thanks again....Last edited: Feb 17, 2011
