Believe it or not 90% lumber and logs and the rest a mix of steel, mulch, stone and misc equipment. I can get regular loads out of Va,Nc and Sc comeing back north for $2.50 to $3 a mile. Like i've said before it pays to use direct shippers and not brokers. My loads out of New England pay over $2 a mile also. Told ya freeird come up to Ct i have 2 local dedicated runs i could use trucks for the money is good.

this is how it should be.. owner operators helping each other out with direct shippers and cutting out brokers.. we should make our own broker network without blind BOL's. I want a dedicated shipper for a better rate, but at the same time i dont want a dedicated shipper cause then it would mean i'm obligated to make sure all of their loads get delivered. i became an O/O to have my freedom.. bills are paid, savings looking pretty, got the next two months of bills already, then i dont think i'll got to work today or tomorrow, or all of this week. but if i have a dedicated shipper then i have to make sure they're product get's where it needs to be.. can't let em down.

When calling on direct shippers, what is your sales pitch? We have 2 trucks and 2 dry vans and about to add a 3rd. Up until recently, we had a dedicated great-paying route with <gasp> CH Robinson lol, but now they have low-balled us by an average of over $1 a mile so we must move on. I have called on companies in my area but have not had a good response (rude managers, hang ups, etc.)

Thanks -
I only call on the phone if the person is out of the area and I can't get by to see them. I usually ask how they are coordinating shipping. And tell them I am an O/O based out of the area pulling a dry van. And then follow the conversation. I am in the early stages with some good volume accounts and I have positioned myself as the person willing to help them solve problems.
One can't get people to go into OK. Mostly because the rates and volume out are low. So I have an agreement that I need to make a certain amount. If I can't get that out he pays the difference. Even offered to work something if it is over but he is not interested in that. So I have solved a problem for him. -
I hear you on this and I know that I am going to have a conflict coming in the fall during harvest. I have a contract to haul during harvest. I have been up front with people and started the conversation about making sure I have a plan to get the loads covered.
And my plan is to start a brokerage side and remember my roots. None of this $1000 to the truck when I get $1800. If I can cover my overhead and keep my clients happy that is all I care about. OK, maybe if JBH or the like call on a load I will look for a little payback

Awesome! Thanks for the response BigBadBill.

I agree truckers helping truckers is the way to beat down these brokers.

LOL. If I understood this, count me in. I've got my own tractor and I'm looking to pull loads. And Yes back back is a #####!!!
