interesting, I go to my moms house up there about 25 northeast of Philly. Agent in Philly is very nice, I've done a lot of work for him.
As far as NJ & NYC most drivers can't deal with the traffic, and don't know their way around the bridges in NY. If you go in and out the right way it doesn't cost so much, and with NY EZ-pass you get a 25% discount on most NY tolls. Parking is always an issue, very hard to park on the island unless you know of a spot you wont be bothered.
nobody wanted the load I did to the WTC construction site with 4pm delivery. I drove right in and right to the site with very little traffic. At that hour it is all coming out. Crossed the Manhattan bridge and was the only vehicle on it at 3.50pm. -
I know most of mercers loads aren't on the loadboard like a lot of companies out there do. Still I can't find one single mercer dry van load . It is like 9 to 1 in favor of flats over there here at universal its the same way. I am with a dry van only agent now and freight is picking up. I'm working the weekend but not by choice. If I could get 2 .00 a mile for a 900 mile trip like redd pulling a van and choose my hometime I'd be in the KY state tomorrow. It just worries me cause I see zero mercer dry vans and nothing on the websites load board. I even called and spoke to a lady at mercer and she said dry van freight was thin in Memphis. ? ? Have you been to Memphis lately? It's like grand central station there .

well curtain and conestoga are similar and from what i've seen most customers treat them the same, either they insist on only loading them, or refuse to load them.
curtain should have a rigid from and curtain slides to allow access. i believe conestoga has the entire side and frame assembly slide forward to the front of the trailer, kind of folds up like an accordion. that leave a completely open flatbed to work with, except for the portion where there sides are all folded up at the front.
those are the two basic types I know of in that style. There use is somewhat limited. I don't think I would recommend one, at least at mercer. I'm sure the others that have been here longer can give you a better idea. Is that what you are looking at getting?
What about Mercer itself are you wanting to know? I'll say that for all of last year I never had a single pay discrepancy. Other places I've been with I'd at least have an occasional error. One company (Quality Carriers) I was luck to get one load completely correct per week! I've been very impressed with how open the company is to drivers, they don't hide from us like at many other places. No place is perfect and Mercer may not be a fit for everyone, but right now I don't even have minor complaints, other than freight being slow. -
how far they are going? - where to? weight? pay?

Remember Mercer is primarily a flatbed company. They have a small van division which I think services existing customers as an additional service.
Have you spoken with recruiting at all about vans? I wouldn't go with just what one agent says. Just because the agent is in Memphis doesn't mean they handle all the freight there. Agents will often have freight all across the country.
Did I mention - Mercer is primarily a flatbed company?

Easier way to explain it..... Curtain side has a hard top and swing doors on the back. Conestoga style the whole tarp folds up, front or back.
