mercers van frieght is more on the west coast.
i leased with them for awhile after i had done a lot of broker stuff for them.
we weren't a good fit. i didn't like the "hurry up and wait" way they ran me.
hurry up and deliver, go to t-stop, wait till 11 am the following day to get next load, hurry up and get it, hurry up and deliver, repeat process.
plus my dispatcher took more time off than a washington polotician so i had to do most of my own load picking. on the phone while driving and trying to run a calculater and write down stuff sucks!

well, I'm looking to get as much info as I can> I'm approved to go for the orientation, getting my truck within a week or so - I don't want to get into something that I'll be sorry about later. I've spoken to a few reputable ppl - on the phone - and the feed back was acceptable. I just need anything that I may forgot to ask - like trailers, I like van, but, If I'm stuck in a place where loads are tight I may have a better chance getting out if I can load flatbed stuff on it - that's why I was thinking about curtain or conestoga - I guess there is no in-between flat and van eh? -
See, I didn't know about the hard top and doors! I know there are kits to retrofit a flatbed and they sure are expensive.
-
very true.. I just grabbed a load comming out of Duluth, Mn going to Elk Grove village, ill from the North Carolina Agent..
-
would be nice if they were drop n hook
-
Curtain sides & conestoga's can not be used for van freight. All that they are, are primarily flatbeds that have been converted for lazy people who don't want to tarp.
The only assests that Mercer really has in the property in Louisville. Even the agents are independent.
I wouldn't want to do drop & hooks... I like having my own trailer. I know the maintnace on my own trailer. I know when it was serviced last... I know how good the tires, brakes, & everything else it. In a drop & hook situation you know nothing about the trailer.
I just looked and there are 14 van loads within 150 mile radius of Philly. 8 within 150 mile radius of Memphis.
And then ofcourse, regardless what you lease on with. You are still capable of doing power only loads. Power only is when you hook to someone elses trailer & pull it on a one time basis. And lets not forget about the massive UPS winter rush!
This trailer here is a Conastoga.

This one here is a Power Only trailer owned by the United States Air Force. It paid me $3.12 a mile to drag it to Miami. Come out to be $1.56 a mile on the round trip, & half of it was bobtail!
Magnum1 Thanks this. -
I hope I'm not going to regret this. he he he. one side of me can't wait to get started and the other half is asking what if ?

Being a O/O can be very rewarding.... Yet, it can also be very disasterous. It's all in how you react to things.
I just did some searching to find 2 of my stories to share with you. I started with nothing....
This post linked below is the begining of my story.
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...osts-involved-in-being-o-o-3.html#post1591549
And the thread linked below is what I went thru just a year ago...

I also have to tell you though.... It is OK right now to be up in the air & trying to think things out before decide to come to Mercer.... But once your over here, you will have to make decisions on a whim.... When your dispatcher/cordinator calls you up & offers you a load.... You have the length of that 45 second to a minute phone conversation to say yes or no. -
interesting and true. I guess I'll be getting the 1 year 100k miles ntp premium warranty.
Plus, does mercer require drivers to have HAZ-MAT?
