I left Oregon tuesday night and went to Eureka CA with a load of hay. First time I have gone down the Smith river canyon (hwy 199) in the snow. Then I loaded lumber in Eureka wenesday morning and went across 299 to redding. They turned the chains required signs right behind me on the first two passes out of Arcata. Then smooth sailing across to Redding. Then over hwy 44 and hit snow again just above Shingletown. Once on top had an beautiful drive for a few miles with a full moon and fresh snow. Perfect night, 18 degrees and so bright you could see without lights. Then I drove right into a #### blizzard the rest of the way to Susanville, that got bad and they went to chains required shortly after I came through. Prolly good though, was just a trail for a few miles up there. Finally called it a day at the rest area just south of susanville. Got up this morning and ran on a sheet of ice almost all the way to Reno. Dumped my boards off and hauled ### for home to reload hay and head back to Eureka in the morning.
I love being in storms for some strange reason. They fascinate me.
GuysLady Thanks this. -
You run some of the best trucking country on the planet. I was in Susanville a couple of weeks ago, it was sunny and beautiful.
I left Eureka last night. I had snow, sleet, rain, and sunshine- all within 10 minutes! It was snowing hard & sticking down Oil Well and in to Willits. Ridgewood was dry. This morning I was back in Willits, the snow was gone. A friend of mine came down from Eureka a couple of hours ago, he said it was snowing hard & sticking from Weott to Laytonville.
One of our other drivers told me that 880 through Oakland was such a cluster bomb today that they opened 580 to trucks for a while. Another friend has been sitting at the 49'er in Sacramento since 2 PM yesterday, waiting for 80 to open so he can get to Truckee.
I have just been skating (pun intended) all around this. The only time I've even been rained on while loading or unloading was in Hopland this morning, and then the sun came out when I was half done and it started raining again as I was driving away -
It is cool country, what do you drive? Prolly seen you on the roads,

Usually looks like this. I see a lot more Oregon hay haulers around Eureka since Nolan went out of business a couple of years ago.

I've seen some of those trucks, looks like nice equipment.
My boss has been hauling hay down there for 20 years or so. He has 6 trucks and 4 of us make 3 trips a week down. The boss usually makes a couple a week too.
This is the one I drive.Attached Files:

I see you guys down here all the time.
We've got 3 matching 379's, mine is the one that's (usually) clean. I'm off next week- headed to Medford Tue in my pickup to bring back a bandsaw I bought. I'll keep an eye out for you when I'm back in the truck. -
