I'm a recent grad and have sent off an on-line application to Yellow (that's the only way they'll take an app.). I typed thier name in the search box and got zip. The short on them from one of my instructors is that they are union so the pay is a little better than average, thier turn over is lower than average, and they hire newbs if they need them, whicn they are doing right now. Thanks all !![]()

The non-union company I work for pays better then the union guys, so that's not all it's cracked up to be, in addition to the other problems that come with working union.
-
Mac who you driving for?
-
Mack is correct. There are problems when working union. At some jobs, you'll have to prove your mettle by lumping on docks for a year or so, along with other little nit-picky things. If I were getting back into driving, though, I'd go union. The benefits are too good to pass up, such as medical and retirement. Good companies such as Crete offer great medical benefits, and they also have the 401K plan going, but I'd still go with Yellow. I just like the idea of better benefits and the power collective bargaining brings.
But that's just me. -
I won't say publicly, due to the potential for company snitches lurking, but it is one of the big LTL's.

Well, not only that, but God forbid you check or ...gasp... ADD your own oil to your truck. Do you have any idea what an uproar that would cause? Make sure you pay your 3% union dues or whatever they are now, and vote the way they tell you to. Also the element of seniority can and does create somewhat of a cutthroat environment.

That does sound rather controlling, but most guys can't make the best decisions for themselves all on their own, at least not over the long term. They need some authority to guide them down the road of life. In the USA one can find that authority in unions. Unions help inform workers about all the tricks employers use to stifle labor's bargaining power and guide those workers around those tricks. This means there will be certain rules workers will have to follow if they want to live better lives over the long haul.
For newbies, a union job is absolutely the best way to go. It'll provide more security and more income, not to mention a steady job for decades if those newbies fly right. But they will be guided along the way on what actions to take to ensure they do fly right. This is the price one must pay for more security and more income, no to mention a steady job for decades.
When I was young, I wouldn't have been caught dead in a union job. After learning how the world really works, I'd join a union today. If I were getting back into trucking, a union job is the only job I'd want, really. -
Good luck and keep us posted!!!

The only bad thing I can really see about the UNION companies is the UNION itself.
I work for a UNION Trucking Company and love my job. It's alot of MILES during the night but a good paying job to say the least.
The union makes it bad in the respect that you have to follow there guidelines and pay your dues and go thru the chain of commands when something happens.
YOU get into a LINEHAUL job like mine and you will want to keep it.
I've been doing this for 17 years and can't imagine doing anything else.
YES I had to jump thru hoops to get where Iam at, first a casual and paid my dues to get here but it was worth it in the long run. -
Bump, you've been doing the union thing for 17 years, so it must not be too bad. If that's 17 years with the same company, you're doin' #### good. When I drove, I was lucky if I made it 17 WEEKS with the same outfit before they pissed me off enough to walk out the door. If I would have been union, I'm sure I would have lasted a lot longer. Today I know I would, as I know how bad it can get when one doesn't have representation to protect him from abuse. It's hard to stay at a job when you're all alone out there dodging the vultures that try to peck you to death. A union is like a double barrel scatter gun you can use to solve that problem for good.
