I realize there is a lot of discusion whether positive or negative on the units. Trust me I have read most if not all, and I still can't make up my mind. Maybe I need someone to do it for me, LOL.
I don't have the funds to go all out and top of the line, so I'm leaning more toward the "re-furbished" models that are available.
Question is what is the general thoughts on these units: 430 vs 440 vs 450 vs 540.
I do mainly regional driving in southern Ontario, Canada with some cross border travel.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't go 430 at this point. That original model is getting a little "long in the tooth" to be purchasing one now - though there are plenty still in service.

440/540 are the same software. So just a screen size difference there. Definitely your best performance verses dollars to be found and I would go with the 540 if you are on a budget and still want the larger screen. Just make SURE that the seller states that their units have the 2010 map update already on them.

450/550/750 is the newest series from PCM. They have brighter screen technology than the x40 series, but the biggest factor on those is that they are updating the actual maps about once every 45 - 90 days on those (free off the web application that goes with them, so far...) Harder to find refurbs in that series right now.
