Too bad you can't see the company name.
Even in my wildest dreams,
I can't come up with any excuse for this one !!!! -
10'6", 13'6", at least he hit a bridge with a "6
Beechvtail Thanks this. -
Firstly, it's NY, where they don't post actual clearances--they expect you to do mental math as you come to the bridge/tunnel, etc. Secondly, if it was actually 10'6", the truck would have been topped at about windshield level. It doesn't even look like the top of the sleeper was touched.
There's a place we load at in Louisville with one of those "Liar" signs nearby--to keep trucks from taking the short route back to the highway. The yellow diamond before you get to the RR bridge says something like 11'6". But painted in stencil on the bridge itself, clearly says 13'10". You can tell by looking that the bridge is NOT eleven feet.
Perhaps they ought to start telling the truth on the clearances so drivers will know what to believe.Lilbit, MackDaddyMark and flood Thank this. -
Yup NY Sate is known for that. Especially around NYC to keep trucks off of certain roads...itll say 12'10" but its really 13'10" but even with that. Still never hurts to stop get out and look up # the bridge and your trailer.. So what youll stop traffic its cheaper than a bill for the wrecker!

also alot of these bridges are lower due to the fact that road crews that repave dont always cut the road and add 5 inches to the surface of the highway

Maybe the other side said 14'6"?

Had to have a cop back me and traffic up 3 days ago, destination gave me directions which took me to an 11'6" clearance off of 14 in Wooster, OH, which was around a sharp bend, I couldn't back up without extra eyes...Cop was laughing and said he does this about once a month and wished they would move the sign...Didn't show in my atlas either... -
I have to agree with you on this.
One one of my first trips to NYC I came across a bridge marked 12'2" while traveling at a good rate of speed. Hit the brakes as hard as I could, thinking I wouldn't clear it, and it was a miracle that I didn't end up with someone driving up under the rear of my trailer. Thankfully, a truck passed me in another lane, so I was able to see that he was able to clear it, so I knew I could keep going. Really makes me wonder how many accidents are caused by drivers doing something because they see these signs, and think they can't make it under something they really have enough clearance for.
Not really trying to defend those drivers who hit bridges in NY, as I really think there is no excuse for it. However, I do feel that in a lot of these cases it seems like they do everything they can to make it where the driver gets close to no notice, or one easily missed sign, of something low clearance, then has to make a rushed decision. I also have to wonder just how many of these drivers saw the signs and were confused, thinking it was just more of the way clearances are higher than posted. -
If you look close at the picture...the height is specific to the corner of the bridge....see the arrow below the numbers?
It appears there is clearance above the passenger side.rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
Just speculation on my part, but I've got a feeling that that truck wasn't supposed to be tooling around Fairport at all, much less trying to "raise" that tunnel height. Fairport, if I remember correctly, is one of the snooty little villages outside of Rochester and I'd bet that big, ol', ugly trucks aren't welcomed. Sammy, whatcha think?
