In VT you have to pay the FHVUT tax if you are over 55,000 pounds. Only farm plates gets you away from that.

Yeah Im in total agreeance (is that a word). Could I get away with moving this stuff with farm plates.....probably. Would it be cheaper.....yes. If I were to have a wreck and kill someone with farm plates I would probably loose everything I own. Not worth it to me over sub $500 bucks/year. Well maybe $1000/yr if I have to have the 2290.

I will be about 70K Im thinking depending on what the lowboy weighs in at. I would like a bigger excavator but once you get over about 39k pounds worth of excavator you get into overwidth stuff. The overwidth permits arent too pricey but it aint far after that when you cant get the truck/trailer to axle out.....even if your under gross. IM NOT FOOLING WITH OVERWEIGHT. They wanted $4K/yr for an overweight blanket permit. Not in my price range. I didnt get a per trip cost to move but dont wanna really fool with that either.

Glen, If you go to the FMCSA site, you can fill out the "step by step help with registration" questionnaire. It only takes a min. and shows you what you need for what you are going to do. To haul your own stuff in Texas, you need just the DOT #, in VT I don't need them(intrastate). They have a map showing which states requuire DOT numbers for intrastate. It also shows me that if I get DOT #s for a vt or tx truck, you are good to go for interstate transportation of private stuff as well. You are an interstate private carrier. No "authority" needed but you do need to keep records, have an alcohol/drug program, etc. Texas might have an additional requirement of state authority, but a second reading of the above link looks like they recognize a private carrier (ooida mentions that some states have state authority requirements--Trucking Association, Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association) Doesn't sound too bad for you, hope this helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I did see somewhere if I kept it under 5k miles a year (very possible) that I could file a "suspended 2290" and it was at a very reduced rate.
