As most of us have seen in Egypt and elsewhere in the world...when the government is threatened by their people they shut down the internet. Damage control as it were.
There is a bill moving thru the house to allow the President to do this on a limited basis here. He would have certain control over certain things under DHS.
ABC news reports the only way to prevent him from affecting you is to have a dial up number in another country. ( he can't stop landlines unless he destroys the switch system )

The propaganda put out by our government is just astounding. Our government has ZERO concern for our well being. Every law they pass is about garnering a bigger piece of the pie for THEM. And WE ARE THE PIE. MORE money, More power. THEY OWN US - We are their cattle to herd, then to slaughter, and then to consume at their pleasure.
They simply have to coax us into the pasture(for our own safety of course), then trailer us off to be slaughtered.

Nothing truer spoken. --- No matter what boogie man is scurrying around in the bushes, the government cannot protect you, nor do they have the responsibility to (multiple supreme court cases address this). ONLY YOU can protect yourself. The government only comes to draw the chalk line around your cold dead corpse.
Concerning the shutting down the internet, that is simply a statist ploy for more power and control over its subjects - We the People!
So please... think before giving up, your and my, GOD given rights(1st AM. free speech/assembly) for the illusion of security.

EXACTLY... They apparently don't apply anywhere in the US. But I'm trying to get the word out.
We the people have just let our government run wild. --- And some of us have encouraged it. I used to be one of them.
