Have you checked into possibly getting financing via WIA (Workforce Investment Act)? Your local One-Stop Career Center should be able to help.
Also, is there a community college or votec center in your area that offers CDL classes? They will be much cheaper than commercial schools and typically have a person on staff who knows about all sorts of tuition assistance (Pell Grant comes to mind, for example).
Leave for orientation at Roehl the day after tomorrow.

I have faith that you will get what you want if you work hard enough at it.This may sound stupid, but I believe it will happen when it is supposed to happen.
Let me know if your husband is coming though the Ellenwood terminal in the next day or so. I would like to say hi to him. The classroom is just off the drivers lounge here. I have talked to about 4 or 5 drivers today. I actually found out that there is a drop yard in Hampton Va, only about 3 or 4 miles from my house. That will make if nice when I am home. I will not have to figure out a spot to park the truck or take up my driveway.
Today we took our Drug test, drivers test, HAZMAT test and filled out an addendum to the application we filled out previously. We watched a few movies on safety. I really like they way they are talking up safety. Our trainer was saying if you do not feel comfortable driving in the conditions that are out there, like high winds, snow and such, just pull over and call your DSR to let them know. He said that Roehl would rather loose a few hundred dollars for a load being late than buying the load, trailer, or tractor and possibly loosing a driver because you wrecked the truck. Every thing we went over today had something to do with safety. We spent plenty of time covering the Safe Seven Techniques of the Roehl Way.
We took our driving test in a Freightliner condo with a flatbed on it. It was a little different than what I had driven in school, but I made it. The truck was about ten years newer than the school house trucks. I have never driven a straight 10 before, so it was a little weird. I actually didnt realize it until after I was done and riding in the jump seat in the sleeper, but I was skipping 6th all together. I was shifting it like it was a nine speed. I guess it didnt matter since there was no load on it and it was light.
They fed us lunch at the terminal, but gave us a voucher for $8.50 to use at the hotel or at Piccadilly Cafeteria just up from the hotel. The Best Western is a decent place too. They have us two to a room. Not bad. This is much bigger sleeping arrangements that I am used to on a ship. Lol
Have a nice night,

Pedy - Glad all is going well for you!
I passed my CDL test today (WHAT an experience!) and I am supposed to go to Roehl orientation in August. I am worried about being rusty since I am not able to start orientation sooner. What did your driving test consist of?
Thanks for keeping us posted and keep up the good work! -
Rob,
I'm glad you are enjoying your experience and doing well. I think you will be very happy with Roehl. Geez you think they would give me free schooling for all the talking up I do about them. (just kidding) Seriously, my husband enjoys driving for them and I am getting excited reading about your experiences.
Lkat, Congrats on passing the CDL test. I bet what you learned and with taking the test it will come to you when you are at Roehl.
Ok Ok on a great note.......my sister emailed me tonight and she and her husband will co-sign for me! I emailed Carrie and sent the form to my sister. As soon as Carrie gets it she will set up school for me. I am so happy.

Welcome aboard Mudpuppy! It will probably take a little time to get me into school. Being a female they have to make sure there is room Carrie told me but hopefully it won't be too long of a wait.
Rob, John is suppose to be going to Ellenwood soon for a safety meeting. Exactly when I don't know. His truck number is 1815.
PS anyone want to give me hints on what is on the CDL written test?

I guess I should have said that I'm a newbie and going to training in Wisconsin, I'm not an experienced driver! As far as the CDL written tests go, ( I got my permit and endorsements yesterday), all I can say is study everything. There are several different tests with different questions here(SC) so if I say one question was on the test, it may not be on someone elses test. Most of it was the basics, not too much was not common sense. At least on my test. I got tricked on a few though, missed three out of 50 questions on General Knowledge, 2 out of 20 on Air Brakes endorsement, and 1 out of 20 on combo veh. endorsement. Just glad that part is over!

Now you have NO idea what you are in for!!!! hahahaha!!! Well, maybe you do - listening to all the tales of woe from us newbiesNow you will have your own tales of woe
I went to a tech school for my CDL and it was TOUGH - I definitely had to EARN my CDL - Roehl's program will be at least that hard. But you have your hubby for support, and everyone at Roehl that I have dealt with so far has been professional and helpful - so, it will be tough & tiring, but you know you are getting real training. Roehl's attitude toward safety really impresses me and you'll be trained that way from the get-go.
The CDL test questions - here is a great website - I don't know about the policy on posting links here, but this website is great. Try these practice tests (over & over & over!):
