I am getting ready to start driving school the end of June and have been checking out the companies. Anyone know about the following?

    AVP (Arkansas Valley Petroleum)

    Con-Way

    Arrow

My real interest is in Fed-Ex freight or special delivery or UPS freight.

Or any other based out of Tulsa, OK.

Also, what about tankers or getting my hazmat? Should I go for these right out of the school?

Thanks in advance for any help you offer.

Stay away from Arrow. Low miles and you sit sometimes days between loads.

I briefly worked for Con-way and I can't recommend them. Line-haul is all done at night, plan on working from 7-8 PM to 9 or 10 AM. I couldn't do it. You're also a dock worker with con-way. There are better LTL's out there like Estes, Yellow, R&L. Con-way is a bottom feeder.

I'm working for Atlantic Bulk Carriers in Richmond, VA. I can't say much bad about them, but lately they lost a big account with BASF plastics. I would go to Ohio and Tennessee on a regular basis and those were very good runs that they lost. Lately I've been going into Canada and they got a new run in New England (but w/o the extra pay that should go with that). I've worked a lot of weekends lately, can't plan on a day off so it's hard on the family life. I'm currently looking for a job with weekends off. If you live near Richmond, VA, you can get home every 2-3 days. Pay isn't bad, either. I've averaged around 50K since I've been there. Just don't think any job is worth sacrificing my family life. But if you like to run hard, you can get all the miles you want there. I understand trucking is one of those jobs where your lifestyle changes (I've been doing it for 11 years) but I'm getting older, now have 2 teenagers who need me home more and need to be able to make plans for the weekends. Other than the above mentioned ABC is a very good company. Basically a mom and pop operation with about 100 trucks, decent people running the place and decent, well maintained trucks and trailers.

I've worked for Con-way for the past 11 years. Yes, you do have to do some things you don't @ other LTL companies. But, they take good care of you. The benefits are awesome and if you have a young family it affords a person the ability to be home for those special early years. No company is perfect. You just have to take the positives and negatives and weigh them out. That will help you make your decision. For me, the Con-way terminal was 9 miles away from my house, I was able to be @ my daughters' basketball & soccer games while they were growing up. The money is GOOD. One thing about LTL companies.....you (usually) have to do your time @ the bottom.... Meaning you will not (usually) step into one of these jobs and make the good money right off the bat. Con-way and FedEx take about 4-5 years to top out. Once you top out the money is killer!!! $50K is low for a linehaul driver. Most make between $60-$70 a year. And larger areas have daytime linehaul runs. Once again, this is something you have to do your time to get. You can expect to make between $500-$700 a week at first. But hey, there are A LOT of guys out there spending 2-3 weeks away from their family for the same amount. You have to take into account what you spend on the road. Most will spend $100 a week easily on the road. Not to mention what you have to spend on Medical Insurance......@ Con-way you pay 1%....that means if you make $800 a week it costs you $8 a week for FAMILY medical/dental/vision. And that's not $1000 deductible either.....it's GOOD insurance. Yeah.....there is some crap that you have to put up with.....but.....weigh the crap out.
